  • Zimbabwe election results Could the opposition party win

But the dispute over the conduct of the elections and the subsequent violence has punctured the euphoria over the army's removal of longtime strongman Robert Mugabe last November and the hope that Zimbabwe might be entering a new era of democracy after decades of political repression and economic ruin.

The ruling ZANU-PF party won a majority of seats in Parliament, the Election Commission said.

Another member of the opposition, Eveson Matambanadzo, said: "The results we have are cooked if you compare the people who voted on the ground to the results that are there it doesn't tally". European Union monitors said the delay was undermining the vote's credibility. Global observers noted the polls were peaceful but diplomats based in Harare said the playing field was not "level".

In official results from the parliamentary election, also held on Monday, ZANU-PF won easily - suggesting Mnangagwa, 75, would be on course to retain the presidency.

Mnangagwa, a former deputy president who fell out with Mugabe and then took over from him, urged people to wait for official results.

Anti-riot police backed by water cannon trucks monitored the demonstrators, while MDC supporters also protested outside the conference center where election results are being announced.

More than five million people were registered to vote, and there was a high turnout of 70 percent. "We won the popular vote [and] will defend it", Chamisa said on Twitter.

Some local and worldwide independent newspapers put the number of deaths at three amid reports of skirmishes between the police, members of the Zimbabwe national army and other security agents in the capital, Harare.

Pfigu said he was optimistic on election day for the country's first vote without Mugabe, who ruled for almost four decades, on the ballot. The situation was under control as police secured the area. They noted several problems, including media bias, voter intimidation and lack of public trust in the electoral commission.

This group has lost all faith in the electoral system and says they will not stop until their man is in the top job - except that's not quite how elections work.

Zimbabwe was once one of Africa's most promising economies but under Mugabe's rule became tainted by corruption, mismanagement and diplomatic isolation.

With three seats yet to be declared in the parliamentary contest, ZANU-PF had 144 seats compared to 61 for the MDC, meaning the ruling party achieved the two-thirds majority that permits it to change the constitution at will.

Tension is rife in Zimbabwe after violence broke out on Wednesday, August 1, following claims by Opposition candidate Nelson Chamisa that the Monday, July 20, election was rigged in favour of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Supporters of Chamisa's MDC party have blocked streets and burned tyres. "We had to consult among ourselves whether it would be safe", said one worker who declined to give his name.

The opposition has spoken of vote-rigging, saying results were not posted outside a fifth of the country's almost 11,000 polling stations.

The ZANU-PF leader tweeted: "At this crucial time, I call on everyone to desist from provocative declarations and statements".
