National Archives may not finish reviewing Kavanaugh documents before end of October

"It's just unbelievable to me that they make such a farce out of this", Hatch, R-Utah, said at news conference with members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, including Sen.

According to the National Archives, there are roughly 560,000 pages of paper records related to Kavanaugh's time as staff secretary and another 475,000 emails either sent or received where Kavanaugh was copied.

The agency, which is tasked with preserving and documenting government records, said Thursday in a letter that it would not be able to comply fully with the request from Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) until the "end of October". The documents in question are all of those from Kavanaugh's time as an associate White House counsel under George W. Bush.

National Archives General Counsel Gary Stern pointed out that this request far exceeded past document requests for other Supreme Court Justice candidates.

Democrats have raised concerns about Bush's legal team going through Kavanaugh's documents, warning that the Senate may not receive all of the documents that they are entitled to, because they are being reviewed by a group of lawyers outside the Archives.

Manchin was one of three Democrats to vote for Trump's first Supreme Court nominee and now Justice Neil Gorsuch.

Once Obama announced the nomination, however, Hatch joined the rest of the Republican Party in refusing to hold confirmation hearings for Garland, saying that the nominee should be chosen after the 2016 election, and not by a president who was on his way out of office. "And I would like to see us hopefully break through and change that attitude with regard to Judge Kavanaugh's confirmation".

"If we could get this all done by October 1 when the Supreme Court starts its new fall session would be ideal".

Democrats wrote to the National Archives requesting a broad set of the documents, using a letter with almost the same language that was sent by both parties in 2010 seeking documentation about Obama's nominee Elena Kagan. They are particularly interested in whether Kavanaugh authored or edited documents relating to the Bush administration's controversial enhanced interrogation and warrantless wiretapping programs.

In a USA Today op-ed Thursday, Hatch wrote that Democrats are trying to "Bork" Kavanaugh.

But Republicans have requested only a portion of the records, leading Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to accuse Republicans of having "cast aside Democratic wishes for openness and transparency". "I'm exhausted of the partisanship and frankly we didn't treat their candidates for these positions the way they're treating ours". Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said at a Capitol Hill press conference on Thursday. Kavanaugh was nominated July 9.

Standing in front of rows of empty boxes labeled "Kavanaugh files", Hatch and other GOP members of the Senate Judiciary Committee argued that their request to the National Archives would give the Senate more than enough material to adequately evaluate the judge's record in what Grassley called a "fair and thorough process".
