Twenty people died when a vintage World War II aircraft crashed into a Swiss mountain at the weekend, police said Sunday, as an investigation was launched into why the plane plummeted straight down at high speed.

According to JU-AIR, a Ju-52 airplane, which seats 17 passengers along with two pilots, had crashed.

Photos released by Graubuenden canton (state) police showed the crumpled wreckage of the plane lying on the mountain, with only the upside-down tail more or less intact.

There were 11 men and nine women aboard, including an Austrian couple and their son, she said.

The German-built Junker JU52 HB-HOT aircraft, dating from 1939 and nicknamed "Iron Annie", was a collectors' aircraft.

Ju-Air offers "adventure flights" for people wanting to experience Switzerland's landscape from vintage planes.

Officials said Sunday they weren't aware of any distress call made from the plane, adding that the investigation into the crash is expected to be "relatively complex" - though there's no indication of foul play.

"What we can rule out at this point is that there had been a collision before the crash, neither with another aircraft nor with some other obstacle such as a cable".

They were produced in Germany between 1932 and 1952, serving both as passenger and military planes.

The cause of the crash, which occurred hours after a family of four was killed when their small plane went down further west in the Alps, is under investigation.

The incident was the worst in Switzerland for several years, but just one of three plane crashes in the country in the space of eight days.

Up to 20 people are feared dead after a small plane crashed in the Swiss Alps. JU-AIR also suspended flights with the remaining two Ju-52s until further notice.
