United Nations to Convene Yemen Peace Talks in Geneva

  • The Saudi Emirati alliance is accused of air raids that killed at least 55 civilians in Hodeidah last week

The strikes on Thursday, which fell close to the city's main hospital, al-Thawra, hit the city's fishing port and busy fish market.

The officials said forces backed by airstrikes from the Saudi-led coalition have been trying to seize the rebel-held district of ad-Durayhimi south of Hodeida city and at least 100 have been wounded over a 24-hour period.

Reports said the drone has bombed the airport, but did not reveal any further details on damage to the airport or any possible casualties.

The talks will aim to solve a conflict that has caused over 10,000 deaths since a Saudi and UAE-backed coalition launched a military campaign on behalf of Hadi's government in 2015.

"Three years of conflict have left 2 million people displaced from their homes; 8.4 million people do not know where their next meal is coming from; and, the worst cholera outbreak in the world occurred in Yemen last year, with 1.1 million cases", said Mr. Ging.

"The disregard of global humanitarian law in Yemen can not be tolerated".

As people rushed the dead and injured to the al-Thawra hospital just 20 meters (60 feet) away, the warplane began bombing the entrance to the hospital, apparently to prevent the injured from receiving treatment.

"There is a war on children in Yemen - very few places are safe for a Yemeni child", she added.

The offer came a week after Saudi Arabia suspended its oil shipments through the Red Sea strait of Bab al-Mandeb after Houthi fighters attacked two Saudi oil tankers.

But the coalition's spokesman, Turki al-Maliki, on Friday denied the charges, accusing the Huthis of having bombed the hospital and the fish market. Fighting around the port has raised United Nations fears of a new humanitarian catastrophe in a country already at the brink of starvation and a deadly cholera epidemic.

Mr. Ging said the ports of Hodeida and Saleef remain open and operational.

On Friday, the World Health Organization warned that Yemen may be on the brink of a new cholera epidemic and called for a three-day truce to allow vaccinations.

"The impact of the strikes is appalling".

Yemen's war has killed almost 10,000 people and triggered what the United Nations calls the world's largest single humanitarian crisis, with more than eight million Yemenis at risk of starvation.

The video was shot amid stalling peace talks to slow the siege of the vital port city of Hodeidah.

The Yemeni government and rebel opposition Houthis have both declared their willingness to attend UN-organised peace talks in Geneva next month.
