Trump says his son sought information on Clinton from Russians in 2016

  • Sekulow Obstruction of justice by tweet is absurd

Trump tweeted that his son met with a Kremlin-connected lawyer to collect information about his political opponent.

"Yesterday - I don't know if you if you were following this over the weekend - he thumbed a doozy".

Mr. Trump made the comment in a tweet on Sunday morning that was meant to be a defense of the June 2016 meeting and the role his son Donald Trump Jr. played in hosting it. Liberal commentators have uninhibitedly called the US President a traitor, even as Trump and his base have argued that Democrat and liberal charges in this regard are just a case of sour grapes after they lost an election they were widely expected to win.

The Trump camp maintains that it doesn't matter anyway, because information on Clinton was never delivered by the Russians, or received by the campaign, in the meeting.

KEITH: It's germane. Also, though, there is the question of, why did President Trump and those around him initially try to hide the fact that they had been offered dirt on Hillary Clinton?

Well, President Trump offered an explanation yesterday in a tweet.

U.S. media then reported that the United States president had been involved in the initial statement his son issued on the meeting.

To make it look like there's something new here, the Times cites old statements, not by President Trump but by members of his team, that the meeting focused on subjects other than opposition research.

However, legal experts say that Mr Trump Jr could fall foul of campaign finance laws, which prohibit accepting anything of value from a foreign government or foreign national.

It's been awhile, so let's check in on the Twitter account belonging to President Donald Trump's personal attorney, former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani.

But The Washington Post over the weekend had a story saying that President Trump was privately stewing about Robert Mueller's special counsel investigation and that he was anxious that his son could be at legal peril because of that Trump Tower meeting.

In an angry tweet yesterday morning, however, he attacked the "Fake News" media reports that he was concerned about his son's role.

KEITH: At the time campaign professionals from both sides of the aisle said, no, they would not have taken that meeting.

While collusion is not a technical legal charge, Mueller could bring conspiracy charges if he finds that any campaign member worked with Russian Federation to break USA law.

Thus, the purported disconnect between President Trump's tweets and statements by others on his team does not exist.

Trump's lawyers and the White House have given conflicting accounts about whether Trump was involved in crafting Donald Jr.'s response to a New York Times article last summer revealing the Trump Tower meeting with the adoptions rationale. The Times wants to keep up its Russia-related anti-Trump drumbeat.

"That is, I guess, the ultimate distraction from what's really going on in this country which is, you have a Republican president, a very conservative president, who is getting stuff done", Trump Jr. said. Now, in the face of that, President Trump had to change the message.

Indeed, that's been the Trump team's story. They purposely cause great division & distrust.

"If it's what you say I love it", Trump Jr. responded.

It's unclear whether Trump's latest admission will affect Mueller's probe in any way.
