The actor who is also a Russian citizen, confirmed the appointment on his Instagram page on Monday. The American actor was granted Russian citizenship in 2016 and is said to enjoy a friendly relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Seagal has said that it's "stupid" to think that Russian Federation or any other country has the technology to tamper with voting.

Once a famous movie actor Steven Seagal appointed special representative of the Russian foreign Ministry on issues of Russian-American cultural ties, - reported the press service of the Ministry in Facebook. Seagal will not accept a salary for apprising the role, akin to a United Nations' goodwill ambassador position both in terms of penance and responsibility.

Seagal is now officially going to develop relations between Russian Federation and the United States in the field of culture, art, public and youth exchanges, etc.

But since then relations between the two countries have deteriorated, with U.S intelligence agencies accusing Moscow of meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

"I think this way Russian Federation demonstrates its willingness to do its best so that negative changes in the relations never become irreversible", he said.

The Russian Embassy in the United States also confirmed the appointment on Twitter.

Seagal's grandmother was born in Vladivostok, Russia, and the two men share a passion for martial arts.

CNN has reached out to Seagal's spokesperson for comment.

A Kremlin spokesperson cited Seagal's "warm feelings toward Russia" and his celebrity status as reasons for the gesture, according to Reuters. Back in 2013, Seagal was Putin's choice to lead a special diplomatic envoy.
