U.S. President Donald Trump has spoken out against family-based immigration, the process by which a family member living legally in the United States may sponsor another family member who wishes to move to the U.S.

Melania Trump's parents were briskly sworn in as citizens of the United States in NY on Thursday (Aug 9). "The application, the process, the interview was no different from anyone else's other than the security arrangements", their attorney Michael Wildes said on Thursday.

Asked if the Knavses had obtained citizenship through "chain migration", Wildes, said, "I suppose".

They arrived and departed from a Manhattan federal building escorted by Homeland Security police. Some workers inside didn't know what was going on.

Advocates for restricting legal immigration have pointed to the imbalance in favor of family connections as evidence of the need for reform, calling for a "merit-based" system that would choose immigrants based on need in the US.

. "Those many people are not doing us right".

President Trump has railed against family-based or "chain" immigration in the past.

Melania Trump - who has been vacationing with her husband U.S. President Donald Trump in Bedminster, N.J. - did not accompany her parents.

The First Lady wears an nearly "naked" dress while accompanying her husband to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit. By 2007, Viktor Knavs reportedly listed his residence as Mar-a-Lago in Florida. Politico said the parents were "expected to become more familiar figures around the White House, helping care for Barron, though they don't plan to relocate full time to Washington".

Born as Melanija, the First Lady changed her name to Melania Knauss when she started modelling. But cracking down on individuals who entered the United States without a visa has not been his only priority; he's also made it even more hard for immigrants to come to the country legally.

However, the circumstances of her immigration are not entirely clear.

There are only a handful of ways that immigrants to the U.S. can obtain green cards, and the largest share of them each year are given out based on familial connections.

The Times noted that the couple would have to have their green cards for five years to become eligible for citizenship.

The First Lady became a U.S. citizen in 2006, after she entered the United States in 2001 on a coveted Einstein visa for people with "extraordinary ability" when she was working as a model.
