  • Wake Forest assistant Jamill Jones has been charged with assault More

- A Wake Forest University assistant basketball coach accused of punching and killing a New York City tourist surrendered to police Thursday, according to NBC New York.

Police arrested Jones, of Kernerville, North Carolina, on Thursday and charged him with third-degree assault.

A Florida tourist died in NY after he was punched by a man he probably thought was an Uber driver, his family said. He died on Tuesday, police confirmed.

Among the cars Szabo allegedly approached was one driven by Jones, which led to their confrontation. Jones then got out and punched him in the face before fleeing the scene.

Wake Forest released a statement. Szabo fell and hit his head hit the pavement, losing consciousness, authorities said. A third-degree assault charge is a misdemeanor in NY. He was arraigned today on a misdemeanor assault charge and released on his own recognizance after entering his plea.

In a statement, Wake Forest said it would comment further once it gathers more information.

"It's an unfortunate and tragic incident", Jones' attorney, Alain Massena, told ESPN. His family says he was in NY for a wedding.

The investigation is ongoing, and charges against Jones could be upgraded, police said.

Jones, a Philadelphia native, previously coached at Virginia Commonwealth and Florida Gulf Coast.

Jones is set to begin his second season on Danny Manning's Wake Forest staff after joining in the spring of 2017. "Sandor was super outgoing, friendly, and an incredibly smart businessman".

"His handsome spirit and his love of life will remain with us", the company said in the Facebook post.
