Farmers in Puthenvelikara said about one lakh banana plants were destroyed in the region due to heavy rains and sought compensation from the state government. "It is the biggest rain we had in 50 years", news agency ANI quoted KJ Alphons saying. The south-west monsoon has been very heavy over Kerala in the past few days.

Tourists have been barred from entering the hilly Idukki district after roads caved in at many places. Many other people are injured or missing as rescue operations are underway by National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) and military team.
