Ousmane Dembele stunner sees Barcelona triumph

Sevilla had a golden late chance to force extra-time when former Barca player Aleix Vidal was fouled by Ter Stegen in the 89th minute, but substitute Wissam Ben Yedder struck his penalty softly along the ground and the towering German goalkeeper comfortably caught the ball.

Dembele scored the victor in the 78th minute after Gerard Pique had cancelled out Pablo Sarabia's opener as Barca beat Sevilla 2-1 in Tangier, Morocco.

Sevilla made the breakthrough in the ninth minute of the match, although it would have been disallowed but for the invention of VAR, which showed that the linesman was wrong to flag Sarabia offside.

The match had endured a controversial build-up when Sevilla threatened to file a complaint against Barcelona if the La Liga champions fielded more than three non-EU players.

Ousmane Dembele scored a late winning goal with a blistering strike from outside the area.

The Catalans were given a much tougher time from the Andalusians than in the Copa del Rey final and met a narrow, determined team who have quickly been whipped into shape by new coach Pablo Machin and who went ahead early on through Pablo Sarabia after a barnstorming run by Colombian forward Luis Muriel.

The Barcelona equaliser did arrive before the break, however, with Pique converting from close range after Messi's free kick had come back off the post and hit Vaclik before dropping into a risky position.

The first serious attempt of the second period came from another Messi free kick just before the hour, but Vaclik did well to make the stop.

Sevilla then hit the crossbar from Franco Vazquez's looping header as both sides pushed for victory.

There was more action to come, with Ben Yedder's miserable penalty, but Barca - who handed debuts to Clement Lenglet, Arthur and Arturo Vidal - win for the sixth time in nine years. Barcelona picked up an unprecedented 13th Supercup trophy to start off the 2018/19 campaign on a positive note.
