#MeToo Campaigner Asia Argento accused of Sexually Assaulting 17-year Old Singer

  • Asia Argento speaks at the closing ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival this past May

Argento, who is an actress and director, was one of the first prominent women to accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault at the outset of the #MeToo movement that rocked Hollywood and beyond.

However, fellow #MeToo figure and Weinstein accuser (as well as friend to Argento) Rose McGowan has spoken out.

Argento's lawyer, Carrie Goldberg, wrote her in April about the agreement and payment plan in an email obtained by the Times, describing the money as "helping Mr. Bennett". Argento accused him of rape, going public with her story in The New Yorker in October. Bennett's lawyer notified Argento last November that he meant to sue for $3.5 million for emotional distress, lost wages, assault and battery. "Our commonality is the shared pain of being assaulted by Harvey Weinstein", she tweeted.

According to the NY Times summary of legal documents, the settlement in question was geared toward avoiding a public claim from Bennett, who alleged that Argento sexually assaulted him while he was 17 years old and she was 37, years after they starred together in a film in which she played his mother. (The age of consent in California is 18.) The two had gotten to know each other almost ten years earlier, when Argento played Bennett's mother in the 2004 film The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things. The report adds that Argento's late boyfriend, Anthony Bourdain, "helped Mrs. Argento navigate the matter".

Three people familiar with the case told the Times the documents were authentic.

The Times said that Bennett's lawyer, Gordon K. Sattro, stated the actor would "continue doing what he has been doing over the past months and years, focusing on his music", over "the coming days". Photos of Argento and Bennett semi-clothed in bed, as well as an Instagram post of their faces taken on that day, were included in the notice of intent to sue. Weinstein has been accused of sexual misconduct and harassment by dozens of women, some of whom also have accused him of rape.

"I got to know Asia Argento ten months ago", McGowan wrote early Monday morning. My heart is broken.

Weinstein has denied all allegations of "nonconsensual sexual activity", and he's remained free after posting $1 million bail in cash.

"None of us know the truth of the situation and I'm sure more will be revealed".

She then asked him to take a number of photos, New York Times said. When Bennett later saw Argento speak publicly as a victim of sexual assault, it brought those memories "to the forefront", his lawyer wrote in the notice of intent to sue.
