With His Former Lawyer Facing Jail Time, The President Responds With Jokes

  • Chris Cuomo This was a bad day for Trump

Today he stood up and testified under oath that Donald Trump directed him to commit a crime by making payments to two women for the principal objective of influencing an election.

"Later on I knew", Trump reiterated in the interview. They did not com out of campaign. That's the big thing.

But Davis noted, as have others, that what "Donald Trump and all of his henchmen miss when they say "no collusion, no collusion, no collusion" is the issue of criminal conspiracy, which he distinguished from collusion. I think a lot of this stems from her courage and what she was willing to come forward and do.

"In fact my first question, when I heard about it, was did they come out of the campaign?"

These were "crimes by the president of the United States and it affected the election", Wine-Banks reiterated. But they weren't - it's not, it's not even a campaign violation.

Cohen and his attorney have made clear that, if asked, Cohen would co-operate with the continuing special counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, an investigation that Trump on Wednesday again called a "Witch Hunt".

US President Donald Trump has praised his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort as a "brave man", saying that he "refused to "break" during the prosecution that led to convictions on eight tax and bank-fraud charges in federal court.

Cohen pleaded guilty Tuesday to illegal campaign-finance charges over hush money paid to a porn actress and a former Playboy model - all but naming Trump as having ordered him to do it.

In television interviews, Cohen attorney Lanny Davis said that Cohen would not accept a presidential pardon if Trump offered him one because he wanted no part in what he saw as Trump's abuse of his clemency power.

Questioned by the federal judge, Cohen said he had paid sums of $130,000 and $150,000 each to two women who claimed they had affairs with Trump, acting at his boss's request, in a bid to buy their silence "with the objective of influencing the election".

Obama's campaign was fined $375,000 by the FEC - one of the largest fines levied against a presidential campaign - for missing reporting deadlines on $1.8 million in contributions.

The president's longtime lawyer dealt him a bitter political blow as he admitted to felony charges in NY that included making illegal campaign contributions.

"In Cohen's case, because they had him over a barrel, because they had all these crimes that they could prosecute him for, they got him to sign a plea that was not negotiated, it was take it or leave it, and he signed it to save his own hide and get a reduced sentence", Schlapp said.

"I feel very badly for Paul Manafort and his wonderful family", the President tweeted.

Trump soon weighed in on Twitter, taking his shot at Cohen and praising Manafort, saying he has "such respect for a fearless man!" He was convicted on eight counts, but the judge ordered a mistrial on a further 10.

The president has also appeared sympathetic to Manafort, saying he was being treated worse than mobster Al Capone. Michael "The Rat" Cohen is how one person close to the president privately described him, a CNN journalist has reported.

"The developments of today will permit us to have the stay lifted in the civil case & should also permit us to proceed with an expedited deposition of Trump under oath about what he knew, when he knew it, and what he did about it", Avenatti tweeted.

On "The Rachel Maddow Show" on MSNBC, Davis said his client had "knowledge about the computer crime of hacking and whether or not Mr. Trump knew ahead of time about that crime and even cheered it on".
