Cristiano Ronaldo had the first opportunity of the game when he headed wide for Juventus after seven minutes but Lazio also made a bright start with Senad Lulic and Adam Marusic calling Wojciech Szczesny into action.

Miralem Pjanic rifled Juventus ahead in the 30th minute with a shot from outside the area before the Turin side added the second in the 75th minute in untidy fashion.

"Cristiano has been with us for 15 days, he worked well in the defensive phase and proved to be a smart lad". His debut, however, proved to be a hard one against Lazio who finished fifth in the Serie A and level on points with fourth-placed Inter Milan last season.

Juventus will be hoping Ronaldo can inspire a fantastic season in Italy, with fans desperate to see their side perform in the Champions League.

"We did not expect this start, we wanted a different calendar", said Lazio coach Simone Inzaghi blaming "basic errors" after defeats against the top two teams.

Ronaldo nearly sensationally doubled the Old Lady's lead 20 minutes before time with a dipping strike from just outside the box but Lazio shot-stopper Thomas Strakosha made a superb save to tip the strike over the bar.

And Juve's pressure told on the half-hour mark as Pjanic met a bouncing ball 20 yards from goal to arrow a finish into the bottom-right corner.

The closest Ronaldo came to breaking his duck was with a vicious dipping effort on the turn in the 71st minute, but it was brilliantly turned over the bar by the Albanian goalkeeper.

"He is the the best player in the world".

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said on Friday he would not hesitate to leave Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench if he felt the Portugal forward needed to save energy.

"Of course we're going to help him, we're going to help him score goals".

In Saturday's second Serie A game, Ancelotti got his first home win as Napoli coach as the southerners fought back from two goals down to edge AC Milan. He has scored 638 goals for club and country in his career.
