Under Trump's presidency, relations between the USA and Canada have become increasingly uncomfortable, with the US president encouraging a trade war with its neighbor to the north.

So it was on Friday morning when Freeland was asked-after the Toronto Star broke a story about President Donald Trump boasting that any deal the USA reaches with Canada will be "totally on our terms"-if the Americans are negotiating "in good faith".

Despite some contentious issues still on the table, the increasingly positive tone contrasted with U.S. President Donald Trump's harsh criticism of Canada in recent weeks, raising hopes that the year-long talks on the North American Free Trade Agreement will conclude soon with a trilateral deal.

"Having said that, we will always stand up for the national interest", Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland told reporters Friday after meeting with Lighthizer.

"There are things that we don't control, particularly the political relationship between Canada and the USA, and we definitely don't want to expose Mexico to the uncertainty of not having a deal".

The Toronto newspaper obtained an account of the comments and was able to report on them because it was not bound to Trump's off-the-record understanding, which was with Bloomberg.

Dairy: Trump has long complained about Canada's protection for its dairy industry, which restricts the ability of USA farmers to enter the market.

A new chapter governing the digital economy, along with stronger intellectual property, labor and environmental standards could also work to the benefit of US companies, helping Trump to fulfill his campaign promise of creating more American jobs. The most frequently cited points of deep disagreement included Mexico's bid to safeguard its burgeoning auto sector-Trump's most obvious target-and Canadian resistance to US demands for more access to Canada's protected dairy market and an end to NAFTA's dispute settlement panels. -Canadian trade. Top U.S. and Canadian officials continue to express optimism a deal can come together.

Lawmakers, including many in Trump's own party, say a deal must include Canada to be approved.

"It's going to be so insulting they're not going to be able to make a deal", said Trump, who is supposedly renowned for his ability to, well, make deals.

Late Friday night, President Donald Trump called for Bloomberg to apologize for violating "a firm off the record statement". My jobs it to find the deal that works for Canada.

Speaking to Bloomberg of the record, he'd said a deal was possible "totally on our terms" and that he'd threatened Trudeau's government in the talks with tariffs on Canadian cars.

"Canada's going to make a deal at some point".

In the early days of the Trump administration it was widely assumed Mexico would be the real target of the U.S.

"The definition of insanity ... is how the president has been treating Canada all this time", Heyman said on CNBC's "Squawk on the Street." "If we don't make a fair deal for the USA after decades of abuse, Canada will be out". Talks are also hung up on US demand to eliminate dispute-resolution panels that Ottawa considers essential, two Canadian officials said Friday.

US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer has refused to budge despite repeated efforts by Freeland to offer some concessions on dairy to maintain the independent trade dispute resolution mechanism under Chapter 19 of NAFTA, The Globe and Mail reported on Friday.
