Ohr Kept Mueller's 'Pit Bull' Weissmann 'in the Loop' on Dirty-Dossier

  • Lawyer was told Russia had 'Trump over a barrel,' sources say

Justice Department official Bruce Ohr and former British spy Christopher Steele - frequent targets of President Donald Trump's ire related to the Russia investigation - were involved in United States efforts to flip a Russian oligarch with ties to the Kremlin, The New York Times reports.

The lawyer, Bruce Ohr, also says he learned that a Trump campaign aide had met with higher-level Russian officials than the aide had acknowledged, the people said.

That revelation prompted the FBI to open the counterintelligence investigation on July 31, 2016, one day after the breakfast but based on entirely different information.

Steele and Ohr, at the time of the election a senior official in the deputy attorney general's office, had first met a decade earlier and bonded over a shared interest in worldwide organized crime. "With Bruce Ohr, do you see him as potentially being in this pattern?"

Ohr and his wife made national headlines earlier this year when it was revealed the couple had strong ties to "Trump Dossier" author Christopher Steele and shady opposition firm Fusion GPS. But the investigation was opened because of conversations involving former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos, and not the dossier, FBI and congressional officials have said.

Goodlatte was not present for the interview with Ohr, which was held Aug. 28 during the House's August recess.

This is in line with unverified information from the Steele dossier that indicated that the Russian government may have had blackmail material on Trump.

Weissman is a Democrat partisan who attended Hillary Clinton's election night party and thanked then-acting attorney general Sally Yates in January 2017 after she defied President Trump's travel ban order. Ohr's wife, Nellie, was also a contractor for Fusion GPS.

In one instance, members read from an email in which Steele wrote to Ohr that he wanted to discuss something with him informally. Hayden cautiously said it's still a "single data point" and "raw information" that would be used as a "departure point" for an investigation, not the endpoint. Both the dossier and Ohr have come under criticism from Republicans, who believe that the Federal Bureau of Investigation improperly relied on its contents in seeking surveillance warrants on former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.

Ohr was told Sessions and Rosenstein did not want him in the post because it involved White House meetings, the sources told the AP.
