Djokovic gets through on hot day; Federer next at US Open?

Australian John Millman has shown plenty of heart in his fourth-round US Open match against world No.2 Roger Federer, winning in four sets.

The 29-year-old Australian had never competed in the fourth round of a Grand Slam prior to this year's event but took his opportunity with both hands as he took out the 20-time major victor 3-6 7-5 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3).

Not since Pat Rafter handed a tantrum-throwing Federer a tennis lesson on the then-18-year-old's grand slam debut at Roland Garros in 1999 had an Australian conquered the great Swiss at a major.

"I'm probably in a little bit of disbelief", Millman said in his on-court interview.

"I don't think she was struggling so much", Vondrousova said. The feet weren't moving.

"I've got a lot of respect for Roger".

Millman cursed himself for missing one set point but threw everything into a series of forehands to bring up a second and forced Federer into another error.

Cilic, who beat Nishikori four years ago for his only major title, was a 7-6 (6), 6-2, 6-4 victor against No. 10 David Goffin, while Nishikori advanced by defeating Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-2, 7-5.

Before the match, Federer said he was "a big fan of John", having trained with him in the past. As the unforced errors mounted - Federer would finish with 77, almost three times as many as Millman's 28 - Federer's wife, Mirka, couldn't bear to look, placing her forehead on her hands in the guest box in the stands.

His match didn't get to the point of a heat interruption, because he wrapped it up in straight sets, but that did come into play for a couple of women's matches.

Sousa, who got past 12th-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta and No. 17 Luca Pouille to become the first Portuguese man to reach a Grand Slam last 16, was "not happy" at Djokovic's first lengthy absence from the court, although he acknowledged there was no rule limiting time of a comfort break.

Nishikori will next face either seventh seed Marin Cilic, which will be a rematch of the 2014 final, or Belgian 10th seed David Goffin. Coming off his triumph at Wimbledon, he has reached the final eight at Flushing Meadows for the 11th time.

It was the 37-year-old's earliest loss at a slam since the Australian Open in 2015 and the first time he has ever lost to a player ranked outside the top 50 in NY. Until meeting Millman Tuesday, Federer hadn't dropped a set all tournament at the Arthur Ashe.

Nishikori missed the U.S. Open a year ago because of a right wrist injury.

He improved to 28-0 at the US Open against opponents ranked outside the top 50, and here's another reason it wasn't all that surprising the way things went against Sousa: Djokovic is now 5-0 in their head-to-head series, taking all 14 sets they've played against each other.
