Typhoon Jebi, packing winds of up to 216 kilometres per hour, made landfall around midday in western Japan near areas still recovering from deadly record rains earlier this summer.

Japanese broadcaster TBS said six people have died in the severe weather, while 126 people have reportedly been injured.

In Osaka Bay, a tanker was swept from its mooring and propelled into a bridge connecting Kansai International Airport and the city of Izumisano in Osaka Prefecture, according to the Japan Coast Guard.

Almost 600 flights were cancelled, along with scores of ferries and trains, NHK public television said.

It had been anchored nearby, but strong wind caused it to drift.

Around 3.9 in. of rain fell in Kyoto in the storm's first hour, with as much as 20 in. expected by noon Wednesday; a few people have already been injured by heavy winds.

Typhoon Jebi reached the western coast of Japan on Tuesday rocking the islands with its devastating 130 miles per hour winds, forcing authorities to evacuate 16,000 people and to warn 1.2 million more to prepare to leave their homes.

Japan's Kyodo News service said it was the strongest typhoon to make landfall in Japan since 1993.

Hundreds of flights, trains and ferries had to be cancelled.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has been campaigning across the country ahead of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's leadership election later this month, cancelled his trip to Kyushu region to take stock of the situation.

He instructed his cabinet to "take all measures possible".

Local media warned that the wind was strong enough to topple traditional-style wooden houses as well as power poles, and urged people in affected areas to avoid non-essential travel.

More than 175,000 buildings in central and western Japan were without power, according to a tally compiled by Bloomberg News of local utilities.

A powerful typhoon has made landfall in western Japan, causing extensive damage and multiple deaths.

In early July, torrential rains battered western Japan, triggering landslides and floods that left 226 dead and 10 missing - the country's deadliest weather-related disaster in more than three decades.

In Japan, evacuation orders are not mandatory and people often stay at home, only to be trapped by rapidly rising water or sudden landslides.

Primary and middle schools in affected areas are closed for safety reasons, while regional businesses also reacted quickly, with a major railway firm and Universal Studios Japan in Osaka shutting down for Tuesday.
