Trump attacks Sessions, suggests Justice Dept. should consider politics when making decisions

  • 'Good job Jeff': Trump blames Sessions as GOP lawmakers charged before midterms

George Conway is throwing himself into the new mix-up between Donald Trump and Jeff Sessions.

Trump wrote on Twitter the Justice Department's decision to file charges will hurt safe Republican seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

WASHINGTON-President Trump renewed his criticism of Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Monday, decrying his Justice Department's recent indictments of two Republican House members because of the political ramifications for the GOP. "Two easy wins now in doubt because there is not enough time", Trump said in his tweet. Duncan Hunter of California and Chris Collins of NY for alleged misuse of campaign funds and alleged insider trader, respectively.

"This tweet alone may be an impeachable offense", Toobin said Tuesday morning, calling it a "disgrace" that could have had harsh consequences if made by someone in a lower position.

Also under investigation is Trump's conduct in dismissing Comey, particularly why he fired him and whether he pressured him to be generous to Michael Flynn, the president's former national security adviser. "These two men have been charged with crimes because of evidence, not because of who the President was when the investigations began". The piece also notes that the president's statement will nearly certainly be incorporated into litmus tests for any attorney general he nominates in the event that Sessions gets fired in the foreseeable future.

Trump stayed at the White House on Monday, watching television. "Really sick!" Trump added in another tweet. "Instead of commenting on ongoing investigations and prosecutions, the job of the President of the United States is to defend the Constitution and protect the impartial administration of justice".

The tension between Trump and Sessions boiled over recently with Sessions punching back, saying that he and his department "will not be improperly influenced by political considerations". He calls both "Obama era, [sic] investigations" - despite both men's alleged wrongdoing taking place in 2017 - and suggests Sessions created an unnecessary headache. Trump would probably argue that he's saying no indictments should be handed down this close to an election, regardless of party.

Later in the segment, Napolitano said that such tweets could be used by Mueller to potentially prove corrupt intent in an obstruction of justice charge.
