Bair's NFL Predictions: Raiders will feel loss of Mack

  • How Khalil Mack trade to Bears impacts the Lions

The Oakland Raiders were never sold on the idea of moving superstar Khalil Mack. Defensive tackle Justin Ellis called it a bittersweet moment.

Mack was recently traded to the Chicago Bears, and former Georgia running back Todd Gurley is not upset about it.

"I felt like, when we showed up here, we wanted to change a culture and I think we did that", Carr said.

The reaction by players was visceral and displayed for all to see on social media, with quarterback Derek Carr tweeting Saturday, "No way", and Bruce Irvin adding, "No [expletive] way". It's one of those things that happen. The hardest part for me is, obviously you lose a good football player, but he's my brother.

Both teams have overhauled at least portions of their offensive or defensive systems, but the Bears do so with a brand new head coach.

The Raiders sent Mack and a second-round pick in 2020 and a 2020 conditional fifth-rounder to the Chicago Bears for first-round picks in 2019 and 2020, a sixth-rounder in 2019 and a third-rounder in 2020. Mack was holding out in search of a massive contract extension and promptly received a six-year, $141 million extension with $90 million guaranteed upon being traded to the Bears. But it was also like a bittersweet moment for us. "He got what he wanted and we know it's a part of the business". Irvin had a similar, albeit more colorful, message.

Now, there's nothing for the Raiders to do but move on - as Carr said they would - and hope that the Bears are bad so that those first-round picks become top-10 picks.

"We only have the offseason study to go off of when (Nagy) was in Kansas City and the relationship there", McCarthy said. "It wasn't my goal to trade Khalil when we got here", he confessed.

This isn't the same Bears team we have seen over the past few seasons. One of the reasons I'm here is because of him", said Gruden, "Unfortunatley we had a standoff with the contract and we could not come to terms. "And regardless of how you look at it, that's what it's all about to me", said Mack, "I'm going to go out and work hard and make sure I put my step on it". "I feel good about that".

Perhaps that's why it was Peppers who - after he gave a much-talked-about inspirational pregame speech in the Green Bay locker room before his first game against the Bears as a Packer, in 2014 - expressed empathy for his old team after a 55-14 Green Bay victory. I believe that 100 percent.

"We won't be able to win a ring together".
