Vijay Singh did it in 2008 before the points system was changed to create more volatility. "Never will", DeChambeau said after finishing at 16-under 268 to claim his second straight $1.62 million first prize.

Tiger Woods was named to the United States' Ryder Cup team on Tuesday as captain Jim Furyk also added veteran Phil Mickelson and in-form Bryson DeChambeau to his line-up. The idea is to find the hottest player to fill out the team, and no one has been close to DeChambeau over the last two weeks.

The FedEx Cup Playoffs began with the August 23-26 Northern Trust, after which the original field of 125 was cut to 100.

Thomas Bjorn will name his captain's picks tomorrow. He has risen from 656 to 26 in the world this year.

Abraham Ancer leads at 13 under, but as we've seen in recent years, no lead is safe in the final round here.

Rose, who led after Friday's opening round, finished second ‎at 14-under.

Ancer couldn't keep pace, dropping three shots in the tough four-hole stretch early on the back nine.

The 25-year-old laced his drive, but it came to rest less than 5cm into the medium rough at the end of the fairway and although he was only 185m from the flag, his second shot was impaired sufficiently by the rough to leave it well short and in the hazard.

The third round of the FedExCup Playoffs is at Aronimink Golf Club for the 2018 BMW Championship, where only the top 30 in the standings will advance to Atlanta.

A few others also were happy to have another week left in a long season.

Though Woods has not won since 2013, he finished runner up at the Valspar Championship and PGA Championship this season. Both moved into the top 70. Furyk will make three selections on Tuesday, and a fourth after the BMW Championship.

The chase is on for golfers like Bryson DeChambeau (-12), Justin Rose (-11), Tony Finau (-9), Rory McIlroy (-9), Jordan Spieth (-9), Tiger Woods (-7) and Brooks Koepka (-7). Woods closed with a 71 and tied for 24th. "It's been a really good year, and although I fell just shy of making it on points, it feels great to be a part of this team and serve this team in any way I can". "But it certainly doesn't hurt". Woods briefly had the lead Sunday in the British Open until he tied for sixth, and he shot a career-best final round of 64 to finish second in the PGA Championship.

The top 30 will compete in the Tour Championship, the final event of the season, on September 20 to 23 at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia.
