Steelers Prepared To Start James Conner With Le'Veon Bell Still Absent

  • Steelers officially throwing all the pressure on Le’Veon Bell

Running back Le'Veon Bell #26 of the Pittsburgh Steelers tosses the ball forward after gaining a first down against the Kansas City Chiefs during the first quarter in the AFC Divisional Playoff game at Arrowhead Stadium on January 15, 2017 in Kansas City, Missouri. On Monday Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert expressed disappointment that Bell hasn't reported, .

"When he gets here, that's when we will start quantifying all Le'Veon Bell-related things, his overall readiness, the amount of time we have between his arrival and the next competition, et cetera, et cetera", Tomlin said.

The Steelers kicked off groundwork for Sunday's season opener in Cleveland with what they call a "bonus" day Monday before they start their preparation in earnest Wednesday.

Bell started for the Steelers the following Sunday in their opener, also against the Browns in Cleveland.

Mike Tomlin was emphatic about that on Tuesday when asked if he is more comfortable with what he has behind Bell today than he was going to Cleveland a year ago.

Center Maurkice Pouncey said Monday that he anticipates Bell rejoining the team Wednesday when the players resume practicing after an off day.

Guard Ramon Foster said the team is focused on "the 53 that are here".

Jones had spent the past five seasons on the roster, including three as Ben Roethlisberger's backup, before being let go Saturday.

"Whenever he comes, we'll welcome him with open arms", Pouncey said. It's fine. He showed up past year at the same time. "That's the appropriate thing". "Totally fine, trust me". In July, Le'Veon tweeted that he envisioned 2018 being his best season to date, as of right now that's looking rather unlikely, at least in a Steelers' uniform. "He provided good and consistent play for us". The vast majority of guys who missed some time throughout the process have worked in some capacity and even participated in the last preseason game.
