Arizona Gov. Taps Jon Kyl as McCain Senate Replacement

  • Former Sen. Jon Kyl to replace John Mc Cain in the Senate

In a statement announcing Kyle's appointment, Ducey said his fellow Republican "understands how the Senate functions and will make an immediate and positive impact benefiting all Arizonans". Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., to fill the Senate seat left by the late Sen.

Arizona voters will get to decide who should fill McCain's former seat in the 2020 election and then again in 2022. Jon Kyl but said he has only committed to serve until the end of the year.

"With almost two decades of experience in the Senate serving along side John McCain, Senator Kyl is prepared to hit the ground running", Ducey said.

Senate Judiciary Committee hearings began on Tuesday to consider President Donald Trump's nomination of Kavanaugh to fill a vacant US Supreme Court seat.

McCain's office said an estimated 15,000 people came to see the late senator as he lay in state in the Arizona state Capitol for a public viewing several days after his death. I wish I could say the same for Arizona's other Senator, but that was not my experience with [John] McCain. By state law the senator will have to be a member of the same party as the departing one, in this case the GOP.

Kyl has acted as a "sherpa" for Kavanaugh following his nomination and has helped to orchestrate his meetings with other senators.

"Jon Kyl will be an extraordinary Senator representing an extraordinary state, Arizona", Trump said in a tweet congratulating Kyl.

The unusual timing of Kyl's appointment could work out for another Arizona Republican who wants to become a USA senator - Rep. Martha McSally.

'I think McCain would be very happy with the pick. They hold 51 seats with 47 Democrats and two independents who align with Democrats - unchanged from when McCain held the seat. "Now, Sen. Kyl can cast a vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation".

"Every single day that Jon Kyl represents Arizona in the United States Senate is a day when our state is being well-served".

"Jon Kyl has a record he's worked across the aisle and he has been lauded by both sides of the aisle", Ducey said.

When asked why he won't commit to serving past the end of the year, Kyl explained that when he left the Senate six years ago, he had no intention of returning.

Kyl said he accepted the appointment because he is putting country first, like McCain did so many times during his political career.

Kyl's new stint in the Senate is not likely to last long.

Representative Steny Hoyer, the No. 2 Democrat in the House of Representatives, said given that the Arizona governor was "not going to appoint somebody who is going to vote with us, it's a pretty good appointment". And if he does choose to stay, the GOP would (almost certainly) forfeit the advantage of incumbency when defending that seat during the next presidential election.

Kyl will be entering a narrowly divided senate where Republicans could gain or lose seats in November.
