Woodward book prompts West Wing witch hunt, sources say

  • Bob Woodward and Donald Trump

Mattis is quoted explaining to Trump why the USA maintains troops on the Korean Peninsula to monitor North Korea's missile activities. "We're doing this in order to prevent World War III", Mattis advises the benighted president when explaining why the USA maintains a military presence in South Korea.

This amounts to an "administrative coup d'état", Woodward says.

Woodward quoted Mattis as telling staff: "We're not going to do any of that".

It was Woodward and fellow journalist Carl Bernstein who exposed the corruption and criminal activity of the Nixon White House with their exhaustive expose of the Watergate affair. He did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Trump's chief of staff, John Kelly, issued a carefully worded denial that he called his boss an idiot.

Mr Kelly said: "The idea I ever called the President an idiot is not true, in fact it's exactly the opposite".

- Gary Cohn, who served as Trump's top economic adviser until March, "stole a letter of Trump's desk" that the president was going to sign that would have withdrawn the US from a trade pact with South Korea.

Some of the book's most anticipated anecdotes concern the Russian Federation investigation, and Trump's lawyers' desires to keep the president out of an interview with lead investigator Robert Mueller.

The president's former lead personal attorney, John Dowd, is quoted in graphic language referring to Trump as a "liar" who will end up wearing an "orange jump suit" if he gives testimony to special counsel Robert Muller, who is looking into ties between the 2016 Trump election campaign and Russian Federation.

When they repeatedly catch Trump with stumbles, contradictions, and lies, the President flies into a 30-minute rage, calls the probe a hoax, and refuses to testify.

President Donald Trump unloaded Wednesday against an explosive new book from journalist Bob Woodward, labeling the tell-all memoir "a work of fiction" as West Wing staff scrambled to rebut its vivid depictions of White House dysfunction. Two sources told me Trump is furious at the portions of the book that describe administration officials questioning his intelligence and emotional stability. He, along with Trump's national security team, then put together plans for the retaliatory airstrike that the administration eventually carried out.

Woodward later says he reached out to Shah, Kellyanne Conway, counselor to the president, and Sen.

She said people should take what is written in books about the president with "a grain of salt".

Bob Woodward, as you might have heard, has a book about President Donald Trump on the way.

On Amazon, Woodward's new book was ranked as the top-selling book on Wednesday.

"They don't tell me", Trump replied. Trump sounded incredulous that he never got to sit for an interview and defend himself to the author.

Trump said Wednesday that such a demand was "never discussed" and accused Woodward of writing false and "scandalous" things about other presidents, including George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Sessions has been a target of the president's wrath since recusing himself from the Russian Federation investigation. Wolff's book attracted attention with its vivid anecdotes but suffered from numerous factual inaccuracies. The White House press office appeared caught off guard when The Washington Post published a story about the book on Tuesday, a week before its September 11 release date. Some White House officials expressed surprise at the number of erstwhile Trump loyalists willing to offer embarrassing stories of the president and his inner circle.

The result was that they could only start pushing back hours after the story first broke, releasing a slew of statements from figures quoted indirectly by the book. But insiders speculated the fallout could be worse than that from "Fire and Fury", given Woodward's storied reputation. Both lawyers have refuted Woodward's account. Woodward used several defence-related meetings to illustrate the president's problem grasping his own administration's policy, including a July 2017 gathering at the Pentagon between Trump, military brass and members of his cabinet. "I've been on the receiving end of a Bob Woodward book", he tweeted Tuesday. "I stole it off his desk", Cohn is quoted as saying.
