  • Mueller will accept some written answers from Trump to questions in Russia probe: sources

Special counsel Robert Mueller will allow President Donald Trump to submit some written answers about whether his campaign colluded with the Russian government ahead of the 2016 election, according to a report Tuesday.

Giuliani, who like the president has repeatedly described the Russian Federation probe as a "witch hunt", told journalist Jeffrey Toobin that Trump's original legal team had struck a deal with Mueller about his expected final report that would allow the White House to "object to the public disclosure of information that might be covered by executive privilege".

Special counsel Robert Mueller sent a letter to Trump's legal team expressing a willingness to accept written answers to some questions, a source says.

Trump has cited their amenable relationship as evidence that the special counsel can not be impartial during the investigation.

"But", she added, "that's a bit like firing Mueller, as many Republicans have warned - it just ups the case for impeachment because the president appears to be hiding something".

Trump's personal attorneys, Rudy Giuliani and Jay Sekulow, declined to comment.

The president's team has also reportedly been wary of sending Trump into an interview with Mueller. In March, Mueller raised the prospect of subpoenaing Trump if he refused to be questioned voluntarily.

The letter does not mention obstruction - but sources said they believe that will likely be part of negotiations with Mueller's team. That's an effort that could lead to a Supreme Court challenge by the White House.

It's not clear how Trump got the photos or what he does with them.

The New York Times first reported Mueller's offer, citing two people briefed on the matter. Trump has said he knew nothing about the meeting before it happened. He wrote then: 'Is Robert Mueller ever going to release his conflicts of interest with respect to President Trump, including the fact that we had a very nasty & contentious business relationship, I turned him down to head the Federal Bureau of Investigation (one day before appointment as S.C.) & Comey is his close friend'.

And for another, Trump claimed, without any proof that Comey and Mueller are "best friends" and even more, of the "hugging and kissing" variety.
