In his pre-sentencing statement, Papadopoulos admitted lying to FBI investigators in January 2017 but said it had been out of a desire to protect his career and a naive loyalty to the Trump administration.
"The defendant's lies undermined investigators' ability to challenge the Professor or potentially detain or arrest him while he was still in the United States", they wrote, noting that Mifsud left the U.S.in February 2017 and hasn't returned.
Papadopoulos used his connections with Professor Mifsud, a Maltese, and other Russian nationals in an attempt to broker a meeting between then-candidate Trump and Putin.
The punishment was far less than the maximum six-month sentence sought by the government but more than the probation that Papadopoulos and his lawyers had asked for. Lawyers for Papadopoulos had requested probation, saying he lied not to impede investigation but "to preserve a perhaps misguided loyalty to his master".
Before the sentencing, his lawyer, Thomas Breen, told the court about how Trump had blasted the investigation as "fake news" and a "witch hunt" before Papadopolous met with the FBI and lied.
Moss also said he thought it was important that his sentence send the public a message about the gravity of misleading and, "telling lies to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on matters of grave importance to the nation".
He was also ordered to pay a $9,500 fine and perform community service.
He has testified that senior members of the Trump campaign encouraged him during 2016 to build ties with Russian Federation, including after he told them that Moscow possessed - and could be willing to share - dirt on Trump's election rival Hillary Clinton.
"I see Papadopoulos today", he told reporters aboard Air Force One.
"I do credit the sense that he does feel remorse", Moss said.
In addition, they said Papadopoulos did not provide "substantial assistance" and only came clean after he was confronted with his own emails, texts and other evidence. Told by the professor, Joseph Mifsud, that a Russian operative was "Putin's niece", Papadopoulos credulously repeated that assertion in an email to Trump campaign officials, prosecutors said.
The court filing also suggested that both Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions approved of his outreach to Moscow, contradicting Sessions' sworn testimony. "This investigation has global implications and the truth matters".
The conversations actually occurred after he was brought on as a foreign policy adviser.
Papadopoulos told CNN that he hopes to return to politics in the future.
With the sentence, the young man whom Trump administration officials called a "coffee boy" and whose family members have argued is caught in a spy conspiracy will become the first Trump campaign affiliate to have his criminal case reach its completion in the court system. They are cooperating with investigators and await sentencing.
