Hurricane Florence has weakened to a tropical storm but will likely strengthen again into a major hurricane and could threaten the US East Coast by next week.
Cooper says it's "too early" to know where the storm will go, but he says residents should use the weekend to prepare for the possibility of a natural disaster. Some forecast models showed Florence slamming into land by late next week, while others indicated the storm would curve away from shore.
Cooper signed a transportation waiver that would allow farmers to harvest and transport their crops more quickly.
Wind shear will lessen over the weekend, and Florence should regain major hurricane intensity (Category 3 or greater) by early next week - as the storm moves northwest, getting closer to the United States coastline by the day.
"There is still very large uncertainty in Florence's track beyond Day 5", the National Hurricane Center emphasized, "and it is too soon to determine what, if any, other impacts Florence could have on the U.S. East Coast next week". The storm reached major hurricane status Wednesday, peaking with maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour (210 kph).
According to Reuters.com, Tropical Storm Florence was around 1,000 miles southeast of Bermuda Friday morning and registering maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour.
Meanwhile, two low pressure systems off the coast of Africa behind Florence also had high chances of developing into tropical storms, forecasters said.
There are no coastal watches or warnings now in effect.
