Barack Obama returns to campaign trail, but will he succeed?

Obama also addressed Trump's tone-deaf comments previous year, when the president claimed that there were "some very fine people on both sides" during the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that saw white supremacists squaring off against anti-racism protesters.

In her Opening Statement, Judge Jeanine Pirro blasted former President Barack Obama for criticizing President Trump and the Republican Party during a speech on Friday.

He also pointed out, in reaction to Obama's invocation of Fox News, that even though the former president never called the network the enemy of the people, the targeting of reporter James Rosen.

Trump offered no direct rebuttal to Obama's speech, but tweeted that Republicans were doing well leading up to the midterms.

"Obama has Trump Derangement Syndrome".

Although Obama didn't reference President Trump by name, he didn't need to. "I'm sorry, I watched it, but I fell asleep", Trump stated at a campaign appearance in Fargo, North Dakota.

Obama's remarks to an auditorium of college students in IL - the state he represented before he won the White House - marked the opening salvo in a series of campaign stops aimed at boosting fellow Democrats in November's midterm elections, when voters will elect much of Congress and 36 state governorships.

"More often it's manufactured by the powerful and privileged who want to keep us divided and keep us angry and keep us cynical because it helps them maintain the status quo and keep their power and keep their privilege", he also said.

Obama shared the billing with seven Democratic candidates in competitive U.S. House districts across California.

Mike Levin, who is running against Republican Diane Harkey for the 49th Congressional District seat being vacated by Republican Darrell Issa, paid tribute to the former president last month after receiving his endorsement.

More problematically, Obama's attack on Trump really wasn't directed at the occupant of the Oval Office - it was yet another "tolerant" liberal broadside at those who put him there (even those of us who aren't entirely pleased with Trump's conduct in office). "I found he's very good - very good for sleeping", he said.

Most of what he said was highlighting the importance of the upcoming election.

Republicans say they aren't concerned. Obama was "a lot lower key than yesterday's speech".

As of this writing the jury is out on those outcomes, which is frankly better than we can say for either Obama or Bush ...

Next week, Obama plans to campaign in Ohio for Richard Cordray, the Democratic nominee for governor, and Ohio Democrats.

In Orange County, Republicans held a 13-point edge in voter registration 10 years ago but that has shrunk to 3 points while independents, who tend to vote like Democrats in California, have climbed to 25 per cent. Obama asked, "Its central organizing principle in foreign policy was the fight against Communism, and now they're cozying up to the former head of the KGB, actively blocking legislation that would defend our elections from Russian attack".
