Former Trump aide George Papadopoulos sentenced to 14 days in prison

  • Papadopoulos lawyers released a memo on Friday seeking a reduced jail sentence for their client lying to the FBI when interviewed in January 2017

This is the first sentence dealt to a Trump campaign affiliate in special counsel's Robert Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the Trump campaign. It came just over two weeks after two former top Trump aides were convicted of felony crimes in cases that grew out of the probe.

Court documents suggest Mueller's office had hoped to secure Papadopoulos' cooperation, but quickly concluded he could not be trusted when he began meeting with reporters.

He did not elaborate on the $28 million price tag he cited, though it appeared to be about the cost of Mueller's investigation. "A great day for America!" tweeted the President. Trump tweeted. Senator Mark Warner, the senior Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, which has its own Russian Federation collusion investigation, applauded Mueller's work.

Papadopoulos, one of the key players in the Russian Federation probe - or, as Trump described his role, a "coffee boy" - pled guilty late a year ago to lying to investigators.

The professor told Papadopoulos the Russians had "dirt" on Mr Trump's Democratic presidential rival Hillary Clinton in the form of "thousands of emails".

"I made a terrible mistake but I am a good..."

During his January 2017 interview with the FBI, Papadopoulos misled investigators about when he was told Russian Federation allegedly had dirt on Ms. Clinton.

Papadopoulos, the first campaign aide sentenced in special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation, said he was "deeply embarrassed and ashamed" for having lied to FBI agents during an interview a year ago and acknowledged that his actions could have hindered their work.

The White House distanced itself from Papadopoulos, referring to his campaign role as nothing more than a low-level coffee boy, after his guilty plea.

At that meeting, Mr. Papadopoulos proposed brokering a meeting between Mr. Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. His reaction was that Mifsud "was simply repeating gossip and rumors", Papadopoulos said. "I don't know him", Trump said. Though he added, "I don't feel I can go so far as to not impose a sentence of incarceration at all".

Weeks later, stolen Clinton emails were leaked over the internet by what United States intelligence chiefs now say were Russian intelligence actors. The mysterious Mifsud has since vanished, CNN said.

During an interview with The New York Times this week, Papadopoulos, 31, for the first time gave his own account of why he deceived Federal Bureau of Investigation agents after they arrived at his house in Chicago previous year asking about any connections between Donald Trump's campaign and Russian intermediaries.

The defense portrayed Papadopoulos as an eager campaign aide who was in over his head, and pushed back on claims by the prosecution that he had harmed the investigation.

"I made a awful mistake", Papadopoulos, 31, said in a statement to Judge Randolph Moss in the Washington, D.C., courtroom. "I was young and ambitious and excited".

Outside court on Friday, Papadopoulos' lawyer, Thomas Breen, said his client was a "fool" and had acted "stupidly" in lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

According to the New York Times, George Papadopoulos played a key role in sparking the FBI's probe of Donald Trump's contacts with Russian Federation after he told a diplomat that Russian Federation had dirt on Hillary Clinton.

In court filings, Mueller's team claimed Papadopoulos' lies "caused damage" caused damage to the government's Russian collusion investigation.
