Game, set, match: Serena Williams labels ref a 'thief' at US Open

  • Serena Williams- Sexism claim is a red herring – Serena Williams should apologise after overshadowing Naomi Osaka's big moment

US Open Womens Single champion Naomi Osaka of Japan (L) with Serena Williams of the US during their Women's Singles Finals match at the 2018 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in NY on September 8, 2018. That last violation incurred a game penalty for Williams, an extraordinarily rare action for Ramos to take in a Grand Slam final.

Serena Williams' US Open final furore at officials and her subsequent press conference spray at the treatment of female tennis professionals has been criticised as a "disservice to women's rights".

Williams argued that although she did called Ramos a "thief", male players who have been even more abusive towards an umpire in the past were not punished in the same way.

Williams lost her cool and verbally abused the umpire, calling him a "liar" and a "thief".

When a second code violation for racquet abuse was handed out to her - along with a point penalty - Serena was left shattered and angered. The suggestion of one columnist that Ramos' position in a high chair during the match was itself a symbol of entrenched privilege overlooks the very reason for such positioning: the official is required to have a perspective on the match that the committed competitors can not.

He said: 'I love Serena, first of all.

"I think that Carlos waited and waited to let Serena let off steam and get back into the match". I don't see it's necessary really to debate that.

But others sided against Williams, including an Australian sports magazine editor, Tony Sarno, who tweeted: "Naomi, on behalf of the rest of the world, please accept my apologies for Serena's appalling behaviour during the match and the American crowd's graceless booing at the presentation".

Since then daily rates have improved, from $350 to $633, but Ings said, in his experience, rates didn't increase for the latter stages of the tournament, including the final.

"I feel like the fact that I have to go through this is just an example for the next person that has emotions, and that want to express themselves, and they want to be a strong woman, and they're going to be allowed to do that because of today". Williams then called Ramos a thief.

WTA Tour chief executive Steve Simon has also said the sport should examine the rules on coaching, noting that his organisation allows on-court coaching during regular tour events if a player requests it.

Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley has urged global tennis to affirm its position on coaching during matches following a storm of controversy that erupted during the U.S. Open women's final.

"There's no equality when it comes to what the men are doing to the chair umpires and what the women are doing, and I think there has to be some consistency across the board".

"He did change the course of the match. Time and again, Osaka held firm, trumped Williams at her own power game, and did not panic", he added.

"It's hard to generalise things".
