Despite significant evidence showing almost 3,000 people were killed in the devastating storm previous year, Trump tweeted that the official death toll was a political scheme, two days after he was sharply criticised for saying the government had an "unsung success" in its response to Maria.

"The water was kept in an area that was pretty hard hit during the storm and could have used all the water they could have gotten", Begnaud said in a video report. The study, released last month, showed a much higher death toll than the initial estimate of 64 people.

Two weeks ago, the death toll from September 2017's Hurricane Maria was increased to more than 46 times the previous official government tally.

"We are sparing no expense".

Trump said Wednesday that his administration is prepared for Hurricane Florence, a storm barrelling toward the Carolina coastline, and insisted that his administration's widely panned response to the devastation in Puerto Rico past year was an 'unappreciated great job'.

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló shot back in a statement that "the historical relationship between Puerto Rico and Washington is unfair and unAmerican" and "certainly not a successful relationship".

"Puerto Rico was very important". With Eli Sanders on vacation, Rich Smith asks Dan Savage and Katie Herzog to tell us how prepared we really are, and to speculate about whether we'll ever be prepped enough.

The General Services Administration in Puerto Rico (GSA) says it requested FEMA's inventory of excess water through a federal program on April 17 and was given approval to use the supplies on April 26.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency reportedly told the CBS News correspondent David Begnaud that it provided the water to the central government in response to Hurricane Maria in 2017, but it is unclear what kept the water from being distributed. The study accounted for Puerto Ricans who succumbed to the stifling heat and other aftereffects of the storm and had not been previously counted in official figures.

"We need to deal with the facts, which is these 2,975 people did not die of old age", she said in direct response to Trump's tweet. People had trouble with access to health care and basic necessities like food and water, he said.

The president raised eyebrows Tuesday when he touted the response efforts in a meeting to go over preparations for the potentially devastating Hurricane Florence inching toward the Carolinas.
