Former Trump manager Manafort to plead guilty in Mueller probe: court documents

  • Paul Manafort looks on as Donald Trump appears at the Republican National Convention in July 2016. A superseding crim

In addition to the witness tampering counts, Manafort had been formally charged with acting as an unregistered foreign agent, conspiring to launder money and lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department about the nature of his work.

A superseding criminal information was filed against Manafort in Washington ahead of a scheduled court appearance later Friday morning.

Manafort made a similar unsuccessful request in his bank fraud and tax evasion trial in northern Virginia.

If Manafort decides to cooperate with Mueller's probe, that would deal a setback to Trump ahead of congressional elections on November 6.

So far, lawmakers have not released the details of the agreement, and added that it is unclear if Manafort will cooperate with prosecutors.

At a rally in August, Trump said: "I feel very badly for Paul Manafort".

Manafort has aggressively fought the charges against him and taken shots at his co-defendant, Rick Gates, who cut a deal with prosecutors earlier this year that included a cooperation agreement. Manafort would become the most prominent former Trump campaign official to plead guilty in Mueller's investigation, which has cast a shadow over Trump's presidency. Jackson is allowing prosecutors to mention that Manafort was campaign chairman in August 2016 when press reports, including articles by The Associated Press, called attention to his lobbying work on behalf of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and the pro-Russian Party of Regions.

The criminal information received reduced seven previous charges on money laundering, conspiracy, false statements and failure to register as a foreign agent.

Manafort, 69, earned tens of millions of dollars lobbying for foreign governments and spent that money freely, including on a $15,000 ostrich coat, landscaping and real estate.

Manafort is shown at the Republican convention in Cleveland behind Donald Trump on July 21, 2016. The remaining five charges against Manafort will be dropped.

However, none of the charges relate to collusion with Russian Federation in the election.

The decision by Trump's onetime personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, to plead guilty last month in a federal investigation in Manhattan particularly angered the president, who denounced him as a "flipper".

Prosecutors "applied tremendous pressure on him and. he refused to "break" - make up stories in order to get a 'deal, ' " the president tweeted last month.
