Skripal suspects in the United Kingdom as 'tourists'

  • CCTV footage of the two Russian suspects taken near the Skripal's home in Salisbury

Right on cue, Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov gave an interview on state-funded channel RT on Thursday morning, during which they described their dismay at being swept up in an global scandal.

Both Banister Dean and Enser said they believe RT is close to having its license revoked.

The men seemed to be around 40 years old and wore nearly identical dark blue jumpers.

The RT interview went on: "Speaking of straight men, all footage features you two together".

The British government says they're GRU officers who were ordered to carry out a high-profile assassination. Relations between London and the Kremlin, already frosty, plunged into crisis after the attack.

A European arrest warrant has been issued for the two suspects, but British prosecutors say they will not ask Moscow to extradite Russian citizens because Russia's constitution forbids it.

Downing Street on Thursday called the RT interview "an insult to the public's intelligence".

In a translation from Russian, the broadcaster quoted Petrov as saying they arrived in London on March 2 and attempted to visit Salisbury on March 3 but were thwarted by snow. So they returned the next day.

According to him, Russian Federation "has been emphasizing its willingness and readiness to cooperate in investigating the circumstances of the Salisbury incident and identifying those responsible but Great Britain strongly rejected cooperation at the very beginning".

"Our friends had been suggesting for quite a long time that we visit this wonderful city", Petrov said in the interview.

'Of course, we went there to see Stonehenge, Old Sarum, but we couldn't do it because there was muddy slush everywhere.

Walters also highlighted that the weather conditions apparently did not deter the two from walking an even greater distance to the Srkipal home, which they said in the interview that they might have approached.

'We have repeatedly asked Russian Federation to account for what happened in Salisbury in March.

United Kingdom authorities believe the pair smeared the highly toxic chemical Novichok on a door handle at the Wiltshire home of former GRU officer Sergei Skripal, leaving Mr Skripal and his daughter Yulia critically ill. "Isn't it silly for decent lads to have women's perfume?".

"The customs are checking everything. We didn't have it".

"I have no doubt that Ofcom will look at it", said Mark Stephens, a senior member of the law firm Howard Kennedy, adding he expected the regulator would receive complaints about the interview.

They also confirmed that they had travelled to Europe before.

"When your life turned upside down, you don't know what to do and where to go", Boshirov said.

The two men stressed they wanted the media and everyone else to leave them alone.

"This is not an interrogation", Boshirov said.

He said only a comedian would be able to properly evaluate the interview. Only this week, we heard an official statement from London, which said that they did not plan to employ the legal assistance mechanism and send any requests to Russian Federation. "Their lips move, words come out, but it is the action of putting these men forward that sends the message that Putin is proud of what they did".

Social networks ran amok, with many deriding what they said was a flimsy attempt to cover the tracks.
