  • Attack on Idlib could lead to worst loss of life this century: UN official

The UN has warned a large-scale military operation could create "the worst humanitarian catastrophe" of this century in Idlib, home to some 3 million people - about half of them displaced from other parts of the country.

USA national security adviser John Bolton said the United States, Britain and France agreed Syria would be met with a "much stronger response" compared with previous air strikes if its government conducted another chemical weapon attack, The Guardian reported. "It was noted that the situation there is really hard and every effort is needed to spare civilians from suffering", he stressed.

Haley further blamed Russian Federation and the regime for allegedly carrying out more than 100 air strikes, some of which she said were "ruthless double tap" strikes targeting first responders.

Mr de Mistura's spokesman, Michael Contet, said any debriefing by the envoy about the meeting will be "reserved" for comments he plans to make to the UN Security Council next Tuesday.

"From there, they raided weapons stocks and ever since have been among the most potent factions in the north, so they're not a joke", says Heller.

Haley accused Russian Federation and Iran of having little interest in a political solution and called their actions those of "cowards interested in a bloody military conquest".

Turkey's Sinirlioglu, whose country supports the Syrian opposition, countered that "only a viable cease-fire would allow the creation of an environment to effectively fight terrorism".

Kalin said Turkey expects all parties to make "constructive" contributions and agree on a political solution on Syria. But Putin said this would be pointless as it would not involve the Islamist militant groups that Russian Federation deems terrorists, and Rouhani said Syria must regain control over all its territory.

The U.S. first struck Syria on April 7, 2017, striking the Shayrat Airbase in Syria with 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles launched from the Mediterranean Sea in response to the use of chemical weapons (sarin) at Khan Shaykhun just three days earlier. "The United States followed through when we said that we would respond to the use of chemical weapons".

Iran shares the United Nations' concern about a potential humanitarian catastrophe in Syria's Idlib province and will seek to avert it, Hossein Jaberi Ansari, special assistant to Iran's foreign minister, told reporters on Tuesday. "We are very actively preparing for the possibility that civilians move in huge numbers in multiple directions".

Real chemicals would be used to make the footage appear more authentic and also to provide samples of allegedly contaminated soil from the scene, the ministry said.

Haley warned of dire consequences if mass casualties were caused if the assault went ahead. They are believed to be holding them in the Safaa area.
