News Corp Stands By Serena Williams Cartoon

  • Serena Williams had no complaint with US Open winner Naomi Osaka

According to Australian newspaper The Herald Sun and its cartoonist, Mark Knight, a cartoon of Serena Williams that echoes the harmful caricatures of black men and women once drawn in a shameful part of USA history isn't racist.

In the controversial cartoon, Williams is shown with grotesque features including an oversized nose and lips, and is pictured jumping up and down with a broken racket and a pacifier, likely insinuating that Williams acted like a baby having a temper tamptrum during the final.

The caricature was published alongside unflattering cartoons of US President Donald Trump and North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un.

Fellow cartoonists and Herald Sun editors, however, have come to the defense of Knight, slamming the backlash as evidence that the world has become too "PC" (politically correct).

Knight has suspended his Twitter account amidst the controversy, saying that while there were more positive comments than negative, he wanted to protect his family and friends from abuse, The Herald Sun reported.

Knight responded with cartoon he said he drew of Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios who was "behaving badly" at the U.S. Open.

The above is actually relevant when talking about Mark Knight's cartoon for the Herald Sun, especially when you consider how the outlet reacted to the worldwide uproar.

"Well done on reducing one of the greatest sportswomen alive to racist and sexist tropes and turning a second great sportswoman into a faceless prop", said the Harry Potter author.

The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and United States Tennis Association (USTA) have backed those claims following Williams' straight sets defeat to Osaka.

"The September 10 cartoon not only exudes racist, sexist caricatures of both women, but Williams' depiction is unnecessarily sambo-like", it said. "Ramos, effectively, had no choice but to dock her a point", Navratilova said.

A number of Twitter users showed their support on the social media site.

In addition to her extraordinary tennis skills as displayed in her dominant performance against Williams in her first Grand Slam win, the Japanese-born athlete with a Haitian father is now also being recognized for her broad global endorsement appeal. She did not stomp on her racket during the match as the cartoon portrayed. Commentators said it was racist. Lynne Adams tweeted on Tuesday, "Serena Williams is a large black woman who had a complete meltdown, what is racist about this cartoon".

For Osaka, who four years ago took a selfie with Williams outside the same court, the notion that she was the opposing player handed an advantage by the umpire seemed to fill her with agony.
