Storm Helene is set to hit the United Kingdom on Monday, bringing gale-force winds which have forced the Met Office to issue a yellow weather warning.

The warning means there could be damage to trees, with the possibility of large branches falling, and 'some disruption to transport'.

Northern Ireland is preparing to batten down the hatches as Storm Helene rips into the United Kingdom from today.

While she will have downgraded to a Post Tropical grading by the time of arrival, there will still be enough wind and rain to potentially bring some weather warnings to the majority of the counties.

Emma Smith, meteorologist with the Exeter-based Met Office, said more details would emerge within the next day over what impact the storm might have.

The firm is also offering evens for the wind speed to reach a whopping high of 100 miles per hour in the mainland before the month is out.

Dorset is 'likely' to be affected by Storm Helene, the Met Office warns

A Met Office spokesman said: "A spell of strong winds is expected, initially mainly in the far southwest of England and across western Wales".

On the West Coast of Scotland, ferry sailings were disrupted on a number of CalMac routes and the ferry operator yesterday said some services were "liable to disruption and cancellation at short notice".

Although Storm Helene is due to subside tomorrow, weather expert Alan O'Reilly claims a second storm due to arrive on Wednesday could be a "bigger concern".

"A wind warning is in place for south west England, northern England and southern Scotland".

'High gusts in the 50s or low 60s mph area also possible over high ground in northern England during the early hours of Tuesday'.

Up to 40 millimetres of rain is forecast in parts of the West.
