  • SpaceX booked'world's first private passenger

Musk said the entrepreneur, founder of Japan's largest retail website and one the country's richest people, will pay "a lot of money" for the trip, but declined to disclose the exact amount. The Big Falcon Rocket (BFR) has not yet been built.

Maezawa said at SpaceX's headquarters in California that he will invite six to eight world-renowned artists to join him on the weeklong flight orbiting the moon.

USA private space firm SpaceX has announced that the company's first private passenger to the Moon will be Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa.

Musk didn't just share the BFR renders, though - he also answered a few questions about the craft on Twitter, identifying a part near the nose as the "forward moving wing" - a feature that Redditors picked up on after SpaceX tweeted its first BFR render Thursday night. Find out who's flying and why on Monday, September 17'.

'When you are pushing the frontier, it is not a sure thing.

In an interview in March, Musk said the ship was now being built, adding "I think we'll probably be able to do short flights, short sort of up-and-down flights, probably sometime in the first half of next year".

SpaceX has already upended the space industry with its relatively low-priced reusable Falcon 9 rockets. SpaceX plans to launch the first unmanned mission to Mars by 2022 - a goal Musk himself has described as "Ambitious", with a sight to putting the first humans on the red planet by 2024.

He had said that the trip would happen this year and would not involve a landing, but rather a long loop around the moon.

BFR will inevitably borrow heavily from almost a decade of designing, building, testing, launching, and upgrading 60+ Falcon 9 and Heavy rockets, all successes and failures included.

The spacecraft will continue on toward the Moon, powered by its own engines.

Read everything we know about the BFR and its spaceship design here. He wants to make space travel cheaper and, eventually, enable human life on Mars, thus giving human kind a chance at becoming multi-planetary species.

SpaceX has already contributed to space ventures by privately developing a liquid-fuel launch vehicle that orbited the Earth in 2008. A 90-minute flight costs $250,000.

Russian and Chinese companies are also working on space tourism plans.

Musk's successes have recently been overshadowed by his behaviour and the struggles of his Tesla electric auto company to deliver.

But so far this year, his space firm has also kept up a schedule outpaced only by the Chinese government, making 15 launches with its Falcon 9 rocket.

It's finally starting to feel a little more real as Musk announced the company's first paying passenger on Monday.
