  • Facebook Announces $399 Oculus Quest VR Headset

The new Oculus Quest VR headset combines the best features of the entry-level standalone Oculus Go and the PC-tethered Oculus Rift. Oculus calls this tech Insight, and it's testing it in hundreds of different home spaces so that it can detect as many floors and objects as possible. As part of those efforts, there will be over 50 titles available for the Quest at launch, including The Climb and Moss. Last year's version was still using handheld controllers with integrated touch pads, but the final version will ship with controllers that use Oculus Rift-style thumb sticks and buttons. As for visuals, the Quest uses the same screens as the Oculus Go, coming in at a resolution 1600 by 1440 per eye. While Oculus tells us that the VR headset will start for just $399 with 64GB of built-in storage, the company hasn't announced how much processing power will be crammed into the device. They're big. Cramming all of that into something that sits comfortably on your face is impressive on Oculus's part. The Quest will also allow "six degrees of freedom", which lets people lean and move more accurately within a virtual environment.

Rift was the first VR gear released by Facebook-owned Oculus, but needs to be plugged into computers powerful enough to handle the graphics rich, immersive nature of digital worlds. The Go is meant to make good VR affordable, the Quest provides a standalone experience with high-quality Rift-like experiences and the Rift can connect to a PC for the highest-end experiences possible.

Improved sound with deeper bass and support for Touch controllers is also included with the Quest.

Still, with more powerful standalone VR devices and more compelling VR media, Zuckerberg said he is "confident we're going to get there". Oculus has instead put the tracking sensors inside the headset itself, giving you a fully wireless VR experience.
