  • Everybody on plane survives crash landing in Pacific lagoon

The airline operating a flight that crashed into a Pacific lagoon in Micronesia on Friday now says one man is missing, after earlier saying all 47 passengers and crew had safely evacuated.

The airline said it was making all efforts to ensure the ongoing safety of the passengers and meet their immediate needs.

"When the plane came to a stop all the civilian boats came to help transport passengers to dry land".

"Air Niugini advises that its Boeing 737-800 series aircraft, P2-PXE landed short of the runway whilst landing at Chuuk Island of the Federated States of Micronesia this morning". Persons on board were taken to hospital, all discharged except eight, four of them in critical condition with fractures and injuries. Both the airline and the US Navy said the plane landed in the lagoon short of the runway. "I thought, well, this is not the way it's supposed to happen".

Photos and videos shared over social media showed the plane surrounded by a number of boats shortly after the incident. "One would think they might be afraid of approaching the plane that's just crashed".

While the airline did not provide details of the cause of the crash, it said it had received information that "the weather was very poor with heavy rain and reduced visibility at the time of incident".

James Yaingeluo, one of the first to arrive at the scene, said the plane landed more than 500 meters short of the runway.

The country and the airline's profiles are likely to rise because Papua New Guinea is hosting world leaders in November for an annual meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

Chuuk Lagoon is a popular diving destination and the site of sunken Japanese ships that were bombed by the USA military during World War II.

"We were able to get out, the water was only up to about here on me, inside the plane, and we went out the emergency exit doors", Jaynes said.
