Ronaldo, sent off in last month's 2-0 win over Valencia, missed his first game since joining the Turin club in July but Juventus made light of his absence as they cantered to their ninth straight win of the season in all competitions.

There was measurably more effort exerted from Jose Mourinho's men as they seemed hungry for goals throughout the encounter but seemed unable to actualise it.

Scholes said he was surprised Mourinho was not sacked after United's defeat to West Ham at the weekend.

Although Mourinho may be on borrowed time, with United nine points off the pace in the Premier League after they were also dumped out of the League Cup by second-tier Derby County, the current squad look unlikely to start firing on all cylinders under another manager.

"All of my life, I have followed certain golden rules", Mourinho wrote in his programme notes ahead of Valencia.

"I'm actually sat here surprised he (Mourinho) survived after Saturday, the performance was that bad", the Englishman told BT Sport.

United's upcoming fixtures are even more hard compared to the ones they've faced so far and things could quickly get ugly.

"We tried to play but in some crucial positions in the building up phase we don't have the technical quality to build from the back".

"He has freedom of speech just like anyone else, just like the fans who were chanting "attack, attack" in the second half", he said.

Let us know in the comments.

However, despite the draw Mourinho is not out of the woods just yet as he has not managed a win in his last four games.

"We anticipate everything that it could be unsafe, in the sense of arriving late but we were informed the police refused an escort".
