Shaw became the second youngest Indian to score a Test century and fourth youngest Test centurion on debut.

Shaw is the fourth-youngest worldwide batsman to score a century on debut.

Shaw became only the 15th Indian cricketer ever and the first since Rohit Sharma in 2013 to have scored a century on Test debut and also the second youngest Indian overall after Sachin Tendulkar to have scored a Test century.

The right-handed Shaw struck 19 fours off 154 deliveries while Pujara, also right-handed, faced 130 balls and counted 14 fours in chalking up his 19th half-century in his 63rd Test.

While West Indies, the team will be led by Jason Holder who will look to send a strong message to the host of not taking them lightly.

Shaw, who is being touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket, has even been named in the 12-man squad that India had announced on the eve of the first Test and is likely to make his debut on Thursday.

The opposition attack was far from threatening but due credit must be given to Shaw, who batted like a seasoned campaigner in his first match for India. Gabriel trapped his opening partner Rahul in front with a sharp incoming delivery to give the West Indies an early breakthrough.

While their pacers, including captain Holder, Kemar Roach, and Shanon Gabriel, have impressed their batting has stood up with the likes of Kraig Brathwaite, Roston Chase, and Shane Dowrich scoring heavily at home.

Shaw steered the team to 180/1 just after the lunch break. Unfortunately, Shaw fell at the stroke of tea, in what was a soft dismissal as he chipped one straight into the hands of leggie Devendra Bishoo.

He built a solid partnership with Cheteshwar Pujara.

Shaw and Pujara added 206 runs for the second wicket as the tourists were sent on a leatherhunt for large parts of the second session.

According to Cricbuzz, coach Stuart Law has shown vast faith in the two young pacers: Keemo Paul and Sherman Lewis.
