"The last thing I wanted was to make this about me - that's why I told everyone to tune in at 3 I could tell all my female supporters, 'Psych!'" she said, referring to the real-life Collins's lengthy Senate floor speech on Friday that caused the crash of a website that was set up to fund her future opponent, likely due to an influx of support.

It was not clear that Kavanaugh would have the votes for confirmation until Collins said in a Senate floor speech that she would support his nomination. The vote unfolded with protesters shouting from the gallery.

Kavanaugh's nomination became an intense personal and political drama when university professor Christine Blasey Ford accused him of sexually assaulting her in the upstairs bedroom of a home in a wealthy suburb of Washington in 1982. "Without a hearing", King wrote, referencing the sexual misconduct allegations that prompted him to resign his seat as senator for Minnesota.

But Collins, a moderate, pro-choice lawmaker from ME, said Kavanaugh was entitled to the "presumption of innocence" as the allegations against him lacked corroborating evidence.

Protesters gathered on Capitol Hill prior to the vote, chanting "November is coming!" and "Vote them out!". "If they won't listen to our voices, then they'll listen to our vote". "Vote them out!" and carried signs including, "I am a survivor, not a troublemaker!".

But with both the Democrats and Republicans preaching their own "blue" and "red" waves, respectively, who has the momentum with the midterms a month away?

If the vote goes as expected, Kavanaugh will become President Trump's second appointment to the Supreme Court, creating a conservative 5-4 majority on the nation's highest court for years to come.

Support from Collins and Manchin would give Kavanaugh at least 51 votes, assuming no one else changes their stance.

"I have no doubt", Trump said, telling reporters that he had chosen Kavanaugh, in part, because "there's nobody with a squeaky-clean past like Brett Kavanaugh because he is an outstanding person and I'm very honoured to have chosen him".

Murkowski's rejection of Kavanaugh marked the third time she has opposed a Supreme Court nominee - but the first against a nominee from a Republican president.

Several polls show that Republican enthusiasm about voting, which had lagged behind, jumped after the Kavanaugh hearing last week.

"It can have a lasting impact", said White House spokesman Raj Shah.

Brett Kavanaugh has been confirmed as the next US Supreme Court justice, despite sexual assault allegations.

Kavanaugh replaces Justice Anthony Kennedy, who retired earlier this year.

"From start to finish, President Trump's nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court has been one of the saddest moments in the history of the Senate", Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY said.

After touting the economy and unemployment, and bringing gubernatorial candidate Kris Kobach and House candidate Steve Watkins on stage, Trump returned to Democrats, attacking potential 2020 opponents and the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee, including one riff where he appeared to imagine beating up Joe Biden.

Beyond the sexual misconduct allegations, Democrats raised questions about Mr. Kavanaugh's temperament and impartiality after he delivered defiant, emotional, testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee where he denounced their party.

"I thought that Susan was incredible yesterday", Trump told reporters Saturday as he left the White House to fly to Kansas for a political rally.

"We're very honored that he was able to withstand this frightful, awful attack by the Democrats".
