Donald Trump: ‘Women were outraged at what happened to Brett Kavanaugh!’

  • Brett Kavanaugh A Step Closer To Supreme Court Confirmation After Senate Vote

Hundreds of protesters against Kavanaugh had gathered on Saturday on the grounds of the Capitol and at the Supreme Court.

Kavanaugh's confirmation will create an ideologically cohesive five-vote majority of conservative justices appointed by Republican presidents and a four-vote minority of liberal justices appointed by Democratic presidents for the first time in the Supreme Court's history.

A much larger crowd of protesters is watching the demonstration from behind a barricade. Capitol police dragged some screaming protesters out of the chamber.

Trump then said that women were "extremely happy" to see Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court.

In a twist, Murkowski voted "present" Saturday as a courtesy to Republican Kavanaugh supporter Steve Daines, who was to walk his daughter down the aisle at her wedding in Montana.

But Kavanaugh's blatant display of partisanship during his testimony last week, when he dismissed Ford's accusations as part of "a calculated and orchestrated political hit, fueled with apparent pent-up anger about President Trump and the 2016 election" and "revenge on behalf of the Clintons", made his earlier claims he would "call balls and strikes and not ... pitch or bat", ring hollow. Among them were three of the chamber's moderate Republicans, Senators Jeff Flake of Arizona, Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Senator Joe Manchin, a Democrat up for re-election in conservative West Virginia.

The announcements by Republican Susan Collins of ME and Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia ended most of the suspense over a political battle that has transfixed the nation - though die-hard Democrats insisted on arguing through the night to a mostly empty Senate chamber.

Leahy, a former Judiciary Committee chairman, remains bitter at McConnell for declaring, within hours of Justice Antonin Scalia's death in February 2016, that he would not allow any Supreme Court nominee of President Barack Obama's to receive a hearing because it was Obama's past year in office.

Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia was the sole Democrat to back Kavanaugh, while Alaska's Republican senator, Lisa Murkowski, was the only Republican to oppose him.

Numerous demonstrators held signs reading "I am a survivor, not a troublemaker", recalling the #troublemaker hashtag used by President Donald Trump on Friday in reference to protesters who opposed Kavanaugh's nomination.

To them, McConnell orchestrated the defense of Kavanaugh when the nominee was accused of sexual assault as a 17-year-old in 1982, dictating tactics that prioritized speed over a full investigation into that accusation and another while the nominee was a freshman at Yale University.

Majority Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Mr Kavanaugh was a "serious scholar, a brilliant student of the law and a meticulous and dedicated public servant".

Manchin used an emailed statement to announce his support for Kavanaugh moments after Collins finished talking.

He denied the allegations, but almost all Senate Democrats voted against his confirmation.

Meanwhile, Trump - himself no stranger to sexual misconduct allegations - praised the Senate for confirming his "GREAT NOMINEE" via Twitter. "I do hope that it reminds us that we can take very small steps to be gracious with one another and maybe those small gracious steps can lead to more", she said.

In her riveting appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee, research psychologist Christine Blasey Ford delivered testimony that came close to derailing Kavanaugh's confirmation.

After a bitter partisan fight that gripped the country, lawmakers backed Kavanaugh by 51 to 49 in a procedural vote that moved the Republican-controlled Senate toward a definitive decision on whether to confirm him. Chief Justice John Roberts administered the constitutional oath and retired Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy administered the judicial oath, according to the Supreme Court. Kavanaugh has denied the allegations.

His appointment raised concerns that Kavanaugh, a devout Catholic and conservative jurist, could swing the court to the right on sensitive issues such as abortion.

In fact, Ms. Blasey Ford's account has been rebuffed by three people she says were at the party where she was assaulted.

"He was able to withstand this disgusting, terrible attack by the Democrats", Trump said.

"I used to think he was a pretty fearless guy".
