  • US Secretary of State Pompeo to meet North Korea's Kim Jong-un

In a joint statement with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at their Pyongyang summit last month, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed a willingness to "permanently dismantle" the Yongbyon nuclear complex if the USA takes corresponding action.

Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha says she hopes U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's upcoming visit to North Korea will produce a breakthrough in stalled denuclearization talks.

The secretary of state will also travel to Japan, South Korea and China, from October 6-8, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert told assembled reporters.

North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump held a groundbreaking summit in Singapore in June, where they reached a vague agreement to denuclearize the Korean peninsula, but there has been little movement since.

The U.S. and South Korea have expressed interest in a peace treaty to end the Korean War, which is technically on hold since the 1953 armistice, but there are concerns North Korea would use such a treaty to weaken worldwide sanctions and push for the removal of American troops from the Korean peninsula.

Pompeo said Wednesday he's optimistic he'll come away with a plan for a second summit between Trump and Kim and progress on a "pathway for denuclearization".

The Seoul government earlier said that it does not view the money to be spent on the South Korean delegation's trip to the North as a violation of global sanctions on its regime, though it said that close talks have been under way with the United States on the matter.

The top USA diplomat had announced last week that he was ready to return to North Korea after meeting the hardline communist state's foreign minister on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

"We will never beg the United States to lift sanctions", it said.

The meeting between Pompeo and Kim may also chart a possible second meeting between the two leaders.

Ri's invitation marked an improvement in U.S.

North Korea's state newspaper Rodong Sinmun called the sanctions "rude" in light of its conciliatory measures.

Pompeo brushed aside suggestions of differences between himself and Trump over a timeline for North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons. Last month, the Justice Department charged a North Korean hacker said to have conspired in devastating cyberattacks, including an $81 million heist of Bangladesh's central bank and the WannaCry virus that crippled parts of Britain's National Health Service.

Pompeo stressed that, in the meantime, worldwide sanctions would have to remain in place on North Korea. That was Kim and Moon's third meeting this year as they work to resolve the nuclear standoff following a torrid run of North Korean nuclear and missile tests.

"I'm telling President Trump: 'Enough with I love you, '" Graham said during an interview at the Atlantic Festival in Washington, D.C.
