  • Pakistan: PMLN chief Shehbaz Sharif arrested in water scam

The former Punjab Chief Minister, who was taken into custody by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) a day earlier, was produced before the accountability court while the watchdog sought his custody in a "campaign against corruption".

He had reportedly appeared for a routine hearing of the Saaf Pani case - another major scandal against the PML-N leadership - when NAB officials arrested him in connection with the housing scam.

His lawyer said, that the development meant that Sharif would not be able to campaign for his party ahead of crucial by-elections on October 14.

Shehbaz's elder Nawaz Sharif has already been disqualified for life, and given a 10-year jail term in a corruption case. Coming down heavily on Shahbaz Sharif and criticising his role as Punjab chief minister he said those making hue and cry over the arrest of Shahbaz Sharif, in fact, feared their own arrest in near future over their alleged corruptions during the tenure of previous governments.

The protesters reminded that Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Safdar and Captain (r) Safdar were arrested before the general elections but were released afterwards as nothing could be proved against them.

The watchdog alleged that the leader of the opposition provided contracts on high rates to unqualified companies of his friends.

Shahbaz's son Hamza has also been probed by the NAB for presiding over the company's board of directors meetings many times to issue directions for award of contracts to favourite firms.

Angry PML-N supporters gathered in the premises of the NAB court and stopped the armored vehicle of the police in which Shehbaz was brought to the court.

He accused the prime minister of going on a witch-hunt against the Sharif family, saying Khan could not hide his "government formed through rigging" behind these arrests.

He claimed that the national exchequer had not suffered the loss of "even a single penny" in the case in which Shahbaz was arrested today. The PML-N Parliamentary Party said Shahbaz's arrest was made without seeking permission from the NA speaker. Fawad had reportedly also provided "incriminating evidence" against the younger Sharif in the corruption case, making it hard for him to defend himself before NAB's investigators.

"The fashion in which Shehbaz has been arrested is tantamount to humiliating the entire parliament", said Khursheed Shah, a PPP parliamentarian and former opposition leader.
