Vettel was far back but carried more speed than the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing driver going into the corner, but the move proved to be costly as Vettel made contact and spun to the back of the field.

If Hamilton wins the next race in the United States he will be champion with three races to spare in case Vettel finishes lower than second.

"The touch with Sebastian...in that corner you can't overtake".

Hamilton opened a 67-point lead over Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel with four races left after storming to victory in Japan at the weekend, but Wolff clearly wants to wrap his star driver in cotton wool for the remainder of the season.

"Look at the incident he had with Kimi", Vettel continued. However, he only gave flashes of his quality in his first two seasons which clearly wasn't enough. Hamilton screamed over team radio after his sixth win in the last seven races.

There was an early collision with Sauber driver Charles Leclerc hitting the rear tire of Kevin Magnussen resulting in a puncture and bringing out the safety auto.

Despite starting eighth, Ferrari driver Vettel climbed to fourth and attempted to go down the inside of Verstappen, who had already been issued a five-second time penalty for returning to the track unsafely and blocking Kimi Raikkonen after overrunning a chicane, at Spoon on lap eight.

Lewis Hamilton won the Japanese Grand Prix after qualifying the fastest. The final spots were taken by McLaren's Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne at 14th and 15th, followed by Williams' Sergey Sirotkin and Lance Stroll. The driver was handed a 5-second penalty for the incident.

Meantime, Charles Leclerc says he could not understand why Kevin Magnussen was not penalised for his "dangerous" move in their fight at Suzuka.

"But it's not always right that the other guy has to move".

"After the contact with Max I saw some parts flying off my auto; it was damaged pretty badly on the left hand side". Marcus Ericsson of Sauber took 12th as the lone auto for the team post LeClerc's incident early in the race.

"For me it's unsafe at this type of speed", said Leclerc.

The story took a turn for the worse when it became apparent that the team wasn't as strong as they once used to be.

Steiner explained that Haas could not help Grosjean identify the problem when it struck because of the lack of data from the vehicle.

Asked if he felt he could claim credit for "breaking" Ferrari, Hamilton said it has been a team effort: "I think together we can claim credit for applying the pressure, and ultimately maybe that's what happens in head-to-head battles with top competitors - eventually someone has to, even though they're still performing great, one of them can't always be performing the same".
