In a press briefing Tuesday, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert emphasized that Pompeo's meeting with Kim in Pyongyang demonstrates adherence to a promise, made at the historic face-to-face summit Trump had with Kim in June, to continue the conversation between North Korea and the U.S.

Pompeo was also aiming to set up a location and a time for a second summit between Trump and Kim, although he warned in advance that he might not be able to nail down all the details on this trip and probably wouldn't be in a position to announce anything right away.

The North has committed to taking additional denuclearization steps, such as shutting down its long-range missile engine test site and launching pad in Dongchang-ri on the west coast in the presence of global inspectors and closing its main Yongbyon nuclear complex should the USA take "corresponding measures".

The last trip to North Korea for the secretary of state, in July, did not go so well.

Instead, the top US diplomat has been tasked by his boss with preparing for a second summit with Kim Jong Un, which the North Koreans are pushing for, but that analysts warn will hurt USA goals.

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho told the U.N. General Assembly late last month that "coercive" sanctions were lethal to trust-building between the two nations and that without trust, "there is no way we will unilaterally disarm ourselves first".

An official on Sunday's latest visit to Pyongyang with Pompeo said the trip was "better than the last time", but added: "It's going to be a long haul". "North Korea summit will create good momentum for a breakthrough in the denuclearization and irreversible progress in the peace process on the Korean Peninsula". "After having a nice meeting we can enjoy a meal together", Kim said.

Shortly after arriving in South Korea, Pompeo posted a photo of himself walking along with Kim on Twitter, saying: "Had a good trip to #Pyongyang to meet with Chairman Kim".

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday that he and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made "significant progress" toward an agreement for the North to give up its nuclear weapons.

But even on that, he said, "I doubt we'll get it nailed" down on this trip.

Today's visit will thus likely aim to fix damaged bilateral ties while reaffirming a commitment to North Korean denuclearisation-the general objective of Mr Pompeo's tour.

Pompeo told South Korean President Moon Jae-in, "I will surely tell you in private about our conversation. And we had a very successful morning so thank you and I am looking forward to our time here at lunch as well".

South Korean President Moon Jae-in held talks with Pompeo in Seoul after the top US diplomat met with Kim for more than three hours during a short trip to Pyongyang that was aimed at breaking a gridlock in their nuclear negotiations.

In Tokyo on Saturday, Pompeo promised he would bring up Japan's concerns about North Korea's alleged abductions of Japanese citizens and its nuclear ambitions. But there is growing doubt about whether President Donald Trump's diplomatic push can succeed if the two sides still don't have an understanding of what the other is trying to achieve - or how.

Pompeo, who has been secretary of state since April, made his fourth visit to Pyongyang.

In exchange, the United States would declare a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War - which concluded with an armistice rather than a peace treaty - but North Korea would stop short of delivering an exhaustive list of its nuclear facilities, she said.

In that same series of tweets, Trump also linked the stall in denuclearization to U.S.

Nauert also said she could not comment much further on the goal of Pompeo's time in China.

The North has accused Washington of making "unilateral and gangster-like" demands on denuclearization and has insisted that sanctions should be lifted before any progress in nuclear talks.
