President Donald Trump apologized to Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh for "the awful pain and suffering" he and his family were "forced to endure" during his confirmation process, at a ceremonial swearing-in event at the White House on Monday evening.

One of the women accusing the judge of sexual misdemeanours, Prof Christine Blasey Ford, said Mr Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a house party in 1982 when they were high school students. The FBI probe into the allegations against Kavanaugh reportedly found no corroboration of the allegations against him but was criticized by Democrats for not being a full investigation.

He then announced, "You sir, under historic scrutiny, were proven innocent" before giving the new justice a handshake.

Mr Trump says Democrats will lose in the 6 November congressional elections, which will shape the remainder of his presidency.

Ceremonial swearing-ins are unusual for new justices.

President Trump talks to reporters as he departs the White House in Washington on Monday. The main base of the Democrats has shifted so far left that we'll end up being Venezuela.

On Saturday, the Senate voted 50-48 in Kavanaugh's favor, with Sen. "Folks who feel very strongly one way or the other about the issues in front of us should get out and vote and participate". Protesters, majority women, flooded the U.S. Capitol on Saturday ahead of the Senate's confirmation vote.

Without mentioning the sexual assault allegations, he touted his record of promoting women - and the fact he has become the first justice to have an all-female staff. He said the high court "is not a partisan or political institution" and assured he took the job with "no bitterness". "A brilliant jurist, a man that did nothing wrong, a man that was caught up in a hoax that was set up by the Democrats using the Democrats' lawyers, and now they want to impeach him".

"It was all made up", Trump said.

"When I decided on Brett, I said he's flawless", Trump told the annual convention of the International Association of Chiefs of Police in Orlando, Florida. "So I think even before you start focusing on questions about his truthfulness before a Senate committee, you've got to focus on the urgency of the work over the next 30 days, and that's where my focus is", Booker said.

President Trump gave brief remarks praising Kavanaugh and thanking several Republican senators for their support of his nomination.

He called the Kavanaugh row "a disgraceful situation brought about by people who are evil", and said that the result was "very exciting".
