Intel release first Meltdown-and-Spectre-proof CPUs

  • Intel Announces First 9th-Generation Core Processors

Intel held an event in New York City today, where it announced its ninth-generation desktop processors, going all the way up to the Core i9-9900K. Dropping Hyper-Threading could be a nod towards improving security on its processors related to Spectre and Meltdown, or it could have been an adjustment to improve product segmentation to create a larger gap between the Core i7 and Core i9 families. They are however still on the 14nm architecture, so there is a real sense that the industry is holding its breath in anticipation of Intel launching their 10nm Cannon lake series at some point next year. The Core i7 model interestingly has eight cores, compared to six with the Core i7-8700K, but this model lacks Hyper-Threading which means that the total thread count has actually declined from 12 to eight. Intel has the 4-core boost at 4.8GHz while 6/8-core CPU boost reaches 4.7GHz. Some users have taken to ripping off the IHS, a process known as delidding, to replace Intel's thermal interface material with liquid metal for better temps.

The flagship Intel Core i9-9900K has a base clock 100 MHz lower than the i7-8700K but features the same 5.0 GHz single-core Turbo Boost clock as the i7-8086K.

With clock speeds that range as high as 5GHz, Intel's new 9th generation core CPUs are poised to bring slightly better gaming performance and sometimes drastically better multimedia editing performance to cutting-edge desktop PCs.

Core i9-9980XE: 18C/36T, 3.0/4.4GHz base/boost, 165W TDP, $1,979 MSRP. This processor ships in a new dodecahedron-shaped box which Intel thinks buyers will want to show off.

It comes with dual-channel DDR4 and up to 40 PCIe lanes.

Core i9-9960X: 16C/32T, 3.1/4.4GHz base/boost, 165W TDP, $1,684 MSRP. AnandTech has a rundown of all the new Z390 motherboards if you need help selecting the flawless option for your new build.

Intel will also sell even more powerful Core X (for "extreme") CPUs-which are really Skylake-era designs-with many more cores starting in November. There's also a new Xeon chip, the Xeon W-3175X, for use in workstation PCs to support highly specialized hardware and software such as ECC memory.

Update: Sharp-eyed readers confirmed something I'd missed - Intel's slides do note that 9th Generation CPUs are protected at the same level as Intel's Whiskey Lake.
