Trump, Rosenstein meet on Air Force One in wake of ‘wire’ report

  • Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein

Trump and Rosenstein met for a half-hour, according to the White House, en route to the International Association of Chiefs of Police Annual Convention in Orlando, Fla.

President Trump says he will hold talks with the deputy attorney general on Air Force One amid speculation that Rosenstein may resign or be fired.

Proponents say stop-and-frisk helps prevent violent crime by taking more illegal guns and other contraband off the streets.

The president frequently brings up the IL city when he's talking about crime, and he suggested Chicago consider bringing back the controversial policy used by former New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani, who is also Trump's lawyer.

"Politicians who spread risky anti-police sentiment make life easier for criminals and more unsafe for law-abiding citizens", he said. He turned to Chicago as an example of major city with a crime problem.

Police stats from the beginning of October showed that the number of shooting victims has fallen 18 percent from a year ago and the number of murders is down 20 percent. If the president is saying we should have unfettered, unsupervised stop-and-frisk - the subject of study and criticism pre-2015 - then that's a different thing. Researchers found nearly no correlation between the drop in crime and use of stop-and-frisk.

Trump was also asked about musician Taylor Swift, who expressed her desire over the weekend to vote for Democrat Phil Bredesen over Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., in Tennessee's Senate race. But if he changes his mind, advisers have urged Trump to wait until after the November midterm elections. Whether it's law enforcement or military.

Trump called out Democrats' failure to support local law enforcement by blocking funding requests.

"We look at crime every day, every hour, and we readjust, readjust, readjust. We have already briefed FEMA and FEMA is getting prepared", Trump said.

Rosenstein and Trump had been expected to meet at the White House days later, but that meeting was put off so that the president could focus on a confirmation hearing of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. "We stand proudly with the heroes of ICE and Border Patrol and law enforcement in general", he said.

Trump also heralded recent declines in unemployment as a positive step toward lower crime rates.

Trump began his remarks at a conference for the International Association of Chiefs of Police, which was held at the Orange County Convention Center, around 2 p.m. and praised officers - including Orlando Police Chief John Mina - for the work they do to protect their communities.

He also told attendees that this grant funding would go to more than 50 innovative projects targeting the greatest drug threats facing the United States.

"Today, I'm announcing another $42.4 million for the high-intensity drug trafficking areas program".
