Residents Prepare to Evacuate as Hurricane Michael Heads Toward Florida Panhandle

  • Panovich: Hurricane Michael will bring heavy rain to the Carolinas

As residents of coastal Florida evacuate, Hurricane Michael is expected to grow more severe before hitting the area as soon as Wednesday.

Landfall is expected Wednesday on the northeastern Gulf Coast, where authorities warned of a potentially devastating strike.

That's when Maryland could see the first remnants of the storm. "That's the criticality of following directions".

Of the elderly and infirm patients, Scott had a blunt message for their caregivers: "If you're responsible for a patient, you're responsible for the patient. Take care of them", he said. "You need to evacuate if you're ordered to do so". It's as simple as that.

Mandatory evacuations are underway for Citrus County residents living in Zone A, or in mobile homes. Storm surge could reach a monstrous 12 feet in some areas - enough to "easily go over the roofs of some houses", he said. "We can rebuild your home, but we cannot rebuild your life", Scott said. "Do not think you can survive it".

"We've practiced this many times".

After striking Florida, Michael is forecast to move up the east coast on Wednesday and Thursday, plowing through the Carolinas, still recovering from Hurricane Florence last month. As Michael moves inland, southern Georgia and southeast Alabama can expect damaging winds, too.

The agency warned residents in Florida and Alabama of possible storm surges, high winds and flash flooding.

The storm's rapid intensification over the past two days, despite shifting winds, "defies traditional logic", according to hurricane forecasters.

"The impact will be storm surge, very heavy rain and strong, gusty winds as it makes landfall", Bridges said.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles from the storm's center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles, forecasters said.

The storm was located about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of Cuba's western tip and 520 miles (837 kilometers) south of Apalachicola, Florida.

Much of the state saw the "real thing" past year, when Hurricane Irma force more than 6 million evacuations, flooded cities and left millions without power.

Hurricane Michael is poised to slam Florida's Panhandle by Wednesday afternoon, threatening unsafe storm surges to low-lying areas ill-equipped to handle them - and officials are urging people to get out of the way now.

A hurricane warning has been issued for the Alabama-Florida border to the Suwannee River, and a hurricane watch is in effect from the Alabama-Florida border to the Mississippi-Alabama border.

Emergency officials in both counties and statewide are closely watching the hurricane.

Scott extended a state of emergency to 35 counties and activated 2,500 National Guardsmen for hurricane duty. The governors of Alabama and Georgia also declared emergencies. Scott is urging people along the Gulf Coast to finish their storm preparations Monday evening. As of the 4pm CDT advisory Monday evening, Michael was a category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour.

US Rep. Neal Dunn, whose district includes Panama City, urged people under evacuation orders to get out before tropical-storm-force winds arrived.

If it makes landfall as a Category 3 it will be the first major hurricane to hit the Panhandle since Hurricane Dennis came ashore near Pensacola on July 10, 2005 with 130 miles per hour winds.

The sheriff's office says Wakulla County shelters were rated safe only for hurricanes below that threshold.
